Hello all. New guy here, looking to start playing an RPG.

Mishihari Lord

So, in my new found excitement for RPG gaming (even though I have yet to play one), last night I decided to order the reprint editions of the white box, and the 1st edition players handbook, DM guide, and monster manual. I just got my tracking confirmation e-mail today. I am seriously excited to check these out!!!

As an odd coincidence, after reading your post last night I was thinking about what would be the best way to help someone new to the hobby understand what D&D is about before playing, and I concluded that it would be to read the 1E DMG. More than any other book, in it I see the "soul" of D&D. The rules are a but ... unpolished, but this is more than offset by the ambiance and by Gygax's writing style.

So good call.

I wouldn't worry too much.
You'll naturally find a happy medium basd on your interest and monetary situation. :)

Besdies, Previous Editions of D+D have a metric ton of content, and Pathfinder continues to drop book after book, so it's hard even for a seriously dedicted collector to get EVERYTHING. (The Pathfinder SRD and asscoiated apps are allso very useful to have at the tabletop, though again, there's a metric ton of content in there.)

Speaking for myself, I'm a big fan of published settings, so that's top on my list of stuff to get, typically, follwed by adventure/adventure paths, and then rules add-ons as an afterhthought. But you might be must the opposite; only time will tell! :)

Keep us updated on how your game goes, and what type of charater you chose to play.

The only "issue" I see with trying to run the older versions are the fact that all of the adventure modules (I think that's what they are called) are all out of print, and may be difficult/expensive to track down. Perhaps it was a bad idea, and I got caught up in the excitement, but either way, I think they will be a nice way to start my RPG game collection with a bit of history thrown in. :)

You do have the option, if you either can stand reading books as PDFs or a budget that lets you print them out, of getting a lot of the adventures (and other material) as downloads. From http://www.dndclassics.com/, most easily.

The thing that few people will say is that the game you're actually playing is of secondary importance. A good group with a bad game will be much much more fun than a bad group with a good game. Between D&D 5e and Pathfinder? Not much in it. Pathfinder is slightly bigger, heavier, and has more created for it (and better adventures). D&D 5e is slightly lighter and faster and has a lot less pro-spellcaster imbalance that anyone's discovered.

Thanks again for all of the info everyone.

I was excited tonight when I got in, as my reprint editions of the white box, and the 1st edition players handbook, DM guide, and monster manual were all waiting for me. :D

Also, I started creating my PF character at work today. I am making a human ranger. Since I have to be walked through the entire process, I didn't get too far, but it was a lot of fun doing what I did.

I am hoping to get him finished up tomorrow. It all comes down to how busy we are at work...:p

Thanks again for the advice.
