D&D 5E 5e CB's Stonefast OOC -- COMPLETE

Thx. I saw that, but I guess I had 3.x stuck in my brain (and was expecting a range, e.g., scimitars crit on a natural 18-20).

So, in this edition, a crit is a natural 20 and nothing less? And damage is calculated by adding a second die, then adding any relevant modifiers. Restated another way, one wouldn't double a strength modifier if one critted with a greatsword. So, if Jones the Giant crits with a longsword and has Strength 15, he would deal 2d8 + 2 dmg, NOT 2d8 + 4 dmg. Nor would you merely double 1d8 + 2.

That looks right. In most cases, you double any damage dice that are part of the attack, but not the static damage modifiers. The Critical Hits only on a 20 is all part of the streamlining that 5E embodies. With 3.X you had the initial roll, plus the confirmation roll... it got to be a bit sloggy, especially if you had a lot of attacks (IMO).

Updated Map

Here's the map of the whole complex so far. We're in Rooms 7 & 8. The double line is the secret door, although I think the door is in the center of the wall and probably only allows access for one person at a time. By Fulgrim's guess, there are two to three more rooms to be investigated before we head deeper into the complex. One is the room to the far west. Then there is Room 6 which we decided not to investigate because it had a noisy door. The last is what may be another secret door in Room 3 where we found Roscoe. We also discovered another secret door that we have yet to investigate.

If you show Spec this map, he'll want to run down the corridor to the East to see if there is a matching secret room off of 3. Otherwise, he'll be standing with Roscoe, wanting to move onwards.

Guran carefully checked that the chest would stay shut (unsprung) while not re-locked. Having determined that, he went into the other room again.
I have the most delicious mental image of Guran stuck holding the guidewire on the chest lid while Fulgrim and Spec quit the immediate area.
