[OT] Post them WWII propaganda posters here!

Heh, I like that "Borrowers" one - are those from Something Awful, perchance?

Old Bugs Bunny and Popeye cartoons had some pretty strong propaganda during WW2 - some of the racial caricatures in them are cringe-inducing. Actually, now that I think about it, Popeye was pretty bad even outside of WW2. I've seen episodes where he beat the hell out of caricatures of all ethnicities for no reason. That Popeye - he's a loveably salty old sea-farin' racist!

Nah, they're from some fairly random site I came across once:

I think most of them are pretty good, although some would be guaranteed to offend Eric's Grandmother, so...

KILROY WAS HERE

I know this isn't a poster, but it's close in theme to what's being posted here. The phrase "Kilroy was here" was a mysteriously popular bit of graffiti with (as far as I understand) U.S. soldiers in mainland Europe during WWII. I don't know why though.

On one site the theory was that a navy yards inspector named Kilroy used to mark the places he had checked (doors and such) with the text "Kilroy was here". Troops then transported in those ships started to wonder who this Kilroy was, because he had even been on brand new ships.

Thus was born the habit of soldiers to write that same graffiti whereever they went. The site claimed that there actually had been a Kilroy working in the yards.. but might be BS too.

Hey Alzrius, I don't suppose you could tone down the signature line could you? Every post you make causes us to see a screaming man taking up about a third of the screen...could you maybe make it a bit smaller?

As for Kilroy, I always wondered about that myself. There is a big company out here in Los Angeles called Kilroy, though I doubt they are related to the origin of the phrase "Kilroy was here".

Of course, many of these are rather cutesy-funny to our modern eyes, but let's not forget that a lot of American wartime propaganda was overtly racist, particularly in its depiction of the Japanese. Common propaganda, including magazine covers and such, used words such as "apes," "vermin," "subhuman" with like depictions to describe the Japanese. The goal in a lot of propaganda is to dehumanize the enemy, and racial depictions were particuarly easy for westerners to use against foes like Japan. Perhaps it's not surprising then that the Pacific War in particular was so vicious (on both sides).

For an overview of this, I recommend War Without Mercy by John Dower. The "Why We Fight" series of wartime propaganda films by Frank Capra (of It's A Wonderful Life fame) is also a great depiction of the power of film propaganda at its most effective (of course, the Nazis had Triumph of the Will).

War is hell, even for graphic designers
