Night #3 went well, with most of the game centered around Kyramus's gnome illusionist/rogue and his attempt to steal the items (he got one). I'll post to the Story Hour this week.

For the ILA leaders I'm tentatively thinking that they might be a male human, a female human, a drow, a smaller than man-sized race, and a larger than man-sized monster race, however none of that is set in stone.

hmmm How detailed are you asking for?

Stat wise or no stat wise?

Name: Reader
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Assassin's Guild name: Tarot
character notes: Reader is an enigma. Few know what she is capable of. She has 2 levels in rogue, the rest of her levels is focused most likely on Psion Telepath. The Reader is a formidable ally or enemy due to the fact that the Major arcana has made clones and simulacrums of the Reader. No one knows when the real one is traveling. It is quite possible that the Reader attending the Assassin's League is a simulacrum, but then again the real Reader might just be within reach masquerading as a hand maiden or some other inconsequential role.

Reader is the head of a diverse assassin's guild known as the Tarot. The Tarot follows two castes. The Major arcana, and the minor arcana. Under these two castes are the assassins divided by suits. Cups, Pentacles, Swords and Staves.

Reader appears to be about 5'8, with black flowing hair to the back. She always wears a veil and often masquerades as a gypsy fortune teller.

She is always accompanied, seen or unseen by 4 Tarot assassins. These four are always chosen from the castes, never from the suits.

She does travel with an entourage that uses gypsy outfits and such. She would probably slip into town in the guise of entertainment as some of her entourage are accomplished singers, dancers and performers.

Bounty Hunter

Skeresh Sandrunner
Race: Thrikreen
Class: Sorcerer/Rogue
Focus: Sorcerer spells are used for subterfuge and invisibility. Nothing higher than third level spells as Skeresh doesn't need anything stronger than that, he only needs to augment his existing skills. Rogue focuses on the hunt. Cosmopolitan feat in wilderness lore and taking the tracking feat would round him out well.
Character Notes: Str 16, dX 16, Con 14, Int 14, Wis 14, CHA 16
Sorcerer level 4( Alternative class Psion- Metabolic since Thrikreens have some psionic potential. The thrikreen in the psionics web enhancement has the ability of chameleon and displacement. Using that as a template I'd increase the Psion level to be able to use those powers then add in the rogue levels) , the rest in rogue (not sure what level you were using). Skeresh's spells are all stealth and augmentations. He is fond of invisibility, see invisibility, blur, and jump. When he attacks he prefers to paralyze his victims through range weapons and poison. If he intends to fully kill them outright, he will use strength poison and use his jump ability <usually combined with jump spell> to pounce on the victim (+1 to attack for high ground).

Skeresh is hunting for the Reader for quite some time. He has repeatedly killed the Reader but for some reason the ones he kills are always the false ones. Decoys used to sow unceertainty. Skeresh has kept his ear close to many underworld characters.
In his last bounty, he brought down a a smuggler boss that spilled his guts in order for Skeresh to spare his life. Skeresh found that the information about the Assassin's competition to be highly informative as it would be the perfect place to ambush the Reader and blame it on some one else. Skeresh spared the life of the boss, but not without leaving him something to remember the thrikreen by.
The boss was left handless and tongueless. Skeresh also applied a spell that he devised of his own insectoid mind. The spell acts like an arcane mark where the man is permanently marked with a symbol that all thrikreens will keep him in this condition, never healing him, never allowing anyone else to heal him. Skeresh then deposited the boss to the nearest Thrikreen hive, leaving instructions to feed him. Skeresh will let the boss go if the information he gave proves to be accurate and that the Reader will finally be in Skeresh's hands.

Thanks Kyramus, those are great! If you have the basic stats for each (St, Iq, Wi, Dx, Co, Ch and Hit Points) that would help, otherwise I'll improvise.

And thanks again for the Gnome Illusionist/Rogue idea, I'm getting a lot of mileage out of that idea. Here's what I came up with for him:

Name: Wister N. Wobblewick
Age: 442 (Human Equiv. 58)
Race: Gnome
Gender: Male
Height: 3'4"
Weight: 103 lbs
Class: Rogue / Illusionist
Level: 6 / 15
Eyes: Grey
Hair: White
Alignment: Neutral

Str: 7
Dex: 16
Con: 6
Int: 20
Wis: 16
Cha: 13

Weapon Proficiencies: Dagger, Darts, Short Sword

Items:
Short Sword +3
Darts of Stunning (6)
Ring of Protection +2
Bag of Holding
Bracers A.C. 2
Portable Window (acts as a Passwall spell)

Silver Moon here. I am still having log-on problems with my password, so am using my wife’s EN World account instead

Module Modifications

After six games the players are starting to get bored with meeting the vast number of NPC’s, and this is taking more game nights than I originally planned for. In hindsight, I’ve reached the conclusion that having 30 guest groups was too ambitious, so have decided to scale the total number back to 20. Thus far the party or their associates have met Groups B1, B2, B3, B7, B8, B9, B10, B14, B16, B18 and B29.

Looking through the module I have decided that it is important to retain each of the other following guest groups:

B4 – Eldamar City. The party have been told that General Teakas will be attending, plus it is important to have the Lawton character to lay some groundwork for future modules. Teakas’s father, the dwarven weapon collector, will also be a good bidder to retain.

B11 – Brondani. Having this group, with the descendents of Llyr, is critical to the Silvanost/Mengale conflict over the Stone of Llyr (which the party has concluded will be the key item in the auction).

B12 – Ladymist. This was a great reader contribution and the group counter-balances the Bronze Dragons (B29), plus I am looking forward to DM’ing the Satyrs.

B15 – Miyako. I want to retain at least one group from the orient, due to a subplot with the NPC Hiroshi, although I have decided to combine Guest Group B24 in with these characters as one larger group.

B17 – Draconor. Another good reader contribution, which also ties in directly to the Ring of Fortune auction item.

B23 – Blackdirge. A great reader contribution!. The orc chieftain Hargash is too well developed to leave out. The presence of his orc army along should create some very interesting role playing opportunities.

B25 – Wakefield. Another reader contribution, which ties directly into the Puzzle Box auction item.

B26 – (Egyptian name – still to be determined). The Set worshippers. Can’t leave these guys out, especially since the item that will refuse to leave without has been stolen.

B28 – Highforge – I want to keep at least one of the three planned dwarf groups, and this one looks to be the most interesting. This also ties in with both dwarven weapon magic items.

That means the groups I am now planning to drop are B5, B6, B13, B19, B21, B22, B27 and B30. Some of the subplots that were planned with these I will transfer to other guest groups.

I still haven’t decided about the inclusion Group B20, the Black Mark Pirates. I will probably keep them in reserve, to throw in as a wild card if needed.

The players never cease to amaze me! They spent the better part of the last two games trying to find information about the old gnome who stole one of the auction items, including showing everyone a picture that the only eyewitness saw of the gnome.

Then they end the night in the company of an ancient elf friend of theirs who has been around forever and knows just about everyone there is to know on the continent, and none of them think to ask him about the gnome or show him the picture. If they had he would have been able to give them nearly all of the information they were seeking!

I've noticed that players tend to pigeonhole NPCs in their minds. Maybe it makes it easier to track setting information. Anyhow, if they've known the old man as some sort of friend/patron before the current plotline, they may not think of tying him into it. He's in the "recurrent NPC ally" category instead of the "gives us information about the plot" category. Try having the old man ask leading questions, such as "So, gotten anywhere with that robbery case yet?"

In my game, I tend to have the opposite problem. The minute something odd happened, the players immediately ran off to the high-level NPCs they knew to see if they could help. What's really sad is this was a party of mostly wizard pcs, roughly 16th level. You'd think they'd have the resources to figure things out for themselves. Eventually the NPCs came to the same conclusion and started blowing them off.

Anyhow, your game sounds cool, good luck with it!

Well, having a week between games didn't make any difference, as we started the game where we left off, and none of the players thought to ask him. They did think to ask the old elf about the other two elvan groups in the city, and what he knew of their history (thinking that was what I was hinting about). I couldn't use Byrons_Ghost's suggestion above, as the old elf hadn't been informed of the robbery. I did have him ask them "So, what has been going on lately", but all they answered was about their characters lives for the past few months, rather than the past few days. I had one heck of a time keeping a straight face as they left the inn where the elf was staying, and immediately began talking again about trying to find the gnome.
