hey all, i was in england and several of the castles and churches were made of what seemed unlikely stones to me.

in particular i was fascinated by a couple of places i have included pics of, they were built of flint!

what unusual materials have you guys had buildings/keeps made of?
the first in the ruin at salisbury, the second is a church still in use in richmond :)

Im not sure how accurate it is, but when I'm trying to describe really strong stones, I use Basalt.

I do this becasue Karl Edward Wagner seemed to do it a lot in the Kane books.

Basalt man! Now that's your "strong wall" right there!

Now someone will liley come along and say "Um, basalt is worse than pumice man, it's about as mighty as Saran Wrap"

Isn't there a place in Paruge? named the Bone Chapel? Entire building made of the bones of folks who had died in the black plaugue I think.

Mr. Billy,

My esteemed opinion of your brilliance has even grown greater through your knowledge of the wonderful books of Kane.

I use sandstone, basalt, cement mix. I also use things like gaint turtle shells, clam shells.

Saw a show on the history of cement that was very good and very interesting - lost knowledge to a degree!

Maybe i saw the same one... :) It was about roman cement.. apparantly natural cement.. (ie, heated crushed limestone) often ends up with a slighty pinkish tone. **edit: i suppose i should say that the limestone the romans used was a little pinkish. not sure if all limestone does this**

funny to think the roman buildings were often pink.

And they were often painted with bright earthtone colors. This was common in the mediterrainian in ancient times.

So does this mean, since my name is actually Kane, that I am now worthy of your esteem? :D

I have had castles of crystal, glass, marble, and basalt aside from more normal materials like sandstone and granite. The first couple obviously in a more high fantasy setting, or really fantastic science fiction.

Many of the castles in my Dolmani setting are built into natural rock formations, cliff faces, and earthen domes.
