Survivor Dragons: BLACK DRAGON WINS!

"...but but I'm gonna change people's perception of D&D!" -some people in these threads, probably

If it's an enormous, terrifying, fire-breathing monster, it's a dragon.
Otherwise, it's just some weird magic lizard.
So what we have now is a short list of some weird magic lizards.

The dragons in my games are never color-coded for easy identification. They are all the color of stones: pebble gray, brown with granite-like specks, that sort of thing depending on where they live, and have the chameleon-like ability to change their color to blend in to their surroundings. I like to keep my players guessing.

It isn't until they see the breath weapon do they learn what the "color" of a dragon is (red flames, blue lightning, green clouds of gas, white cones of frost, streaks of black acid.)

Dunno. I find it hard to say what a typical group does, so I don't ascribe meaningful statistics to other groups very often. I mean, mind flayers are pretty iconic, right? And yet, I would guess that the vast majority of campaigns don't have a single mind flayer in them. One could certainly say that most people would be unaffected if you erased mind flayers from D&D (HA! THAT'S JUST WHAT THE MIND FLAYERS WANT!).

I've always thought of the Red Dragon as the iconic dragon in D&D, in the art as well as the play.
Fair enough. I’ve just never found anything remotely memorable about them, that wouldn’t still be there with any other dragon.

I mean, gold dragons fit that.

Reds have a lot going for them, but most people, even D&D fans, wouldn't remember or care about it. Personally, I find their relationship with the githyanki especially interesting and worth exploring in a campaign.
