Exactly. Overused. Nothing about it being red matters to any of those images, it’s just red to not be Smaug.

Of all the chromatics, reds are vastly the least interesting. There is literally nothing interesting about them that isn’t just a generic “dragon” thing.

You say generic; I say emblematic of D&D.

I’d posit that less than 5% of dnd players would notice in no red dragon ever showed up in anything but MM art for the red dragon ever again.

And further that you could go back in time and delete the concept of chromatic dragon types as subspecies of “evil dragon”, and the hobby would be completely unaffected, but even more so if you simply erased the red, nothing else would change.

The only iconic red dragon is The Red Dragon of Wales.
