D&D 5E (2014) Paladin suggestions

my friend just sprang for the ultimate fantasy grounds with all the books. We are going to start a new campaign.

I want to play a Paladin with the oath of the watch. I am going variant human most likely as I love feats.

for those who have had fun with paladins in 5e, what sounds more fun:

A. fey touched feat and resilient (con)

or

B. Fey touched and gwm

I also toyed with the idea of blessed warrior fighting style vs defensive.

or

C. Other fun suggestions for feats.

In the not so distant past I thought about half orc Paladin with orcish fury. I think I am more inclined to run with a caster Paladin

My scores (rolled) were really nice:

16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 9.

if that matters for suggestions. I am a big fan of half feats as an aside. Caster Paladin with fey touched (story reasons) could yield misty stepping and hex or hunters mark. Just torn and looking for fun ideas that I might not have considered. Folk hero background fits my story....

They're all fun options. In 5E, there are abilities that are more powerful than other options, but virtually everything is powerful 'enough' to be fun. I see a lot of people focus on making the most powerful PC, rather than the most fun PC, and I think that results in missed opportunities.

My suggestion to have the most fun is to build a backstory with your DM and then develop the PC's abilities so that they match the backstory. It will give you the most bang for the buck. Doing so will allow the DM to work your story into their campaign, and allows you to start the game more closely tied to the ongoing events. That avoids spending a number of sessions feeling unconnected to the adventure. You get to be part of the story much earlier, rather than having no real stake (or steak if you play a minotaur) in the game.

its a sad thing that paladin's ability are restricted to melee weapons, I would love to play a Watch Paladin with the Gunner feat as the inquisitors from WHFRPG.

Perhaps a race with lore that ties them to fey? Hmm, seems like there can only be one answer.

Gnome paladin on owlbear.jpg

Just imagine an oath of the Ancients paladin with an owlbear mount misty-stepping (sharing the spell with Hoo the owlbear of course) into the middle of combat!

I was thinking a human that was a peaceful but productive peasant.

village/community wrecked by green hag.

she was chased off by watch paladins and the young peasant was invited to join?
I was thinking maybe fey touched due to taking a hags book to better understand and hunt the enemy and use some tricks against her.

I don’t think gnome but did also consider a noble and gentle half orc or firbolg?

Many options

On a more serious note, there are a lot of options. I did an Oath of the Ancients paladin that was more focused on protecting others with sentinel and tanking with sword and warhammer (dueling style). Eventually had shield master and used spells like compelled duel. If the fight didn't come to him, he went to the fight with his misty step. My DM allowed me to use shield master before the attack was completed, but it was also useful to push enemies off the squishies.

He was a dwarf because it was AL and I have a tradition to uphold of my first PC in a public campaign being a dwarf.

For my current campaign I have an Oath of Vengeance paladin (I effectively retired my AL PC a while back). It's also fun, in some ways a similar theme. Abjure Enemy is useful when bad guys are trying to escape, as is Hunter's Mark.

I'm not sure I'd do GWM, your big damage is going to come from smites and in order to smite you have to hit. Lucky on the other hand is on my list, mounted combat as well (although that depends a lot on campaign).

For most people, the fun of Paladins comes from smiting. As such I'd look at polearm master over GWM. Spear and Shield is amazing with polearm master. More attacks means more smites and more crits.

Wanting 2 feats early on an ASI starved class like the Paladin means I'd go Variant Human as well.

If you did want to go more into the caster route, maybe go for inspiring leader - it's not flashy, but very effective.

Talk with the DM. A couple years ago I played a fey paladin of the ancients and asked the DM if he would allow me to swap melee with ranged in regards to divine smite. He did, and it wasn't game breaking or anything.

Gods I love that. I love dwarves too. But really like the idea of compelled duel and had not thought much about it. You gues convinced me. Going caster Paladin, skipping gwm.

think I will go with fey touched so I can do what you are talking about...if I go defensive and such, a high AC would be something. Then again, dueling would be nice if I really dump gwm...

I like it. Thinking resilient con too

An out there approach: start with Fey Touched and then grab Shadow Touched at 4th level. That's 4 "free" spells a day and they add to your known spells. It also increases your Charisma by 2. So at 4th level you could have 16 Str or Dex, 14 Con, and 18 Cha. That's a very spell castery Paladin that can still mix it up in melee just fine.
