The Ethics of Two Way Ignore

... and if I did hide my posts it would mean they would be locked out of discussions with other people in threads I start.

They prior version of ignore we had did this, but the current version does not. Folks are not locked out of discussions by ignore now.

So, I am curious what others think: is it "okay" to make it so people on your ignore list cannot see your posts ...

You may, of course, choose as you wish, but as you might imagine officially it is perfectly okay to do this. You get to choose your level of interaction. Folks are not generally entitled to see your post.

I did not realize. Thanks.
Not locked out, but if someone you’re ignoring starts a thread, even if innocuous with respect to the reason you ignore them, you can’t see the thread in the lists. You have to find some other way to navigate to them such as spotting them in a Google search or by finding a post by someone else you aren’t ignoring and following that link.
I can’t remember if they show up as a followed thread once you’ve posted…

I was worried about the other direction: if I have 2 way ignore on, I thought it locked people out of threads I start. And since a) I probably start too many threads, but b) want people to be able to talk about stuff in them, I would feel bad if I locked someone for no good reason.

I want to reiterate that I use the ignore list for my own mental health as much as I use it to block jerks. Some folks do nothing wrong yet still manage to rub me the wrong way.

I don't ignore people often--I've only done it with two people on here, and one of those is gone now--but I don't do it two-way. If they notice I'm not responding--well, the whole point is to discourage myself from interacting with them, so that's kind of as it should be. I don't need to make threads harder to follow for them.

Same. I'd got recent (probably simply out of date) incorrect information about this.

Edit: Billd91's post above seems to at least somewhat contradict this. Would anyone care to elaborate?

You are ignoring UserX. You have enabled 2-way ignore (hiding posts both ways) .

You start a thread in the D&D forum. UserX will see that thread when they view the D&D forum as if it were a normal thread. UserX will see your first post in the thread. They can respond to it, and other people in the thread. They will not see subsequent posts by you in the thread.

UserX starts a thread in the D&D forum. You will not see that thread when you view the D&D forum, and it is likely you don't know the thread exists. You will still see that thread if it becomes the most recent post on the Forum List, and a few other places. You can still post in that thread if you navigate to it. You will still get notifications about that thread if you follow it or someone mentions you in it. UserX will not see your posts in that thread. You will not see posts by UserX in that thread (including the first post).

With this form, no one is completely blocked out of a thread and unable to respond to it due to ignore settings. This is the way things work with the current forum software, but it's not how it has always worked in the past.

Hope this clears things up.

FWIW, I prefer using 2-way ignore. Some people are on my ignore list just because I find them annoying, or for the mental health reasons mentioned above. It wouldn't be a big deal if they could see my posts. But there is also a (very) short list that I believe are straight up trolls that have just learned to be polite enough to skirt the rules here. I absolutely do not want those people able to see my posts. There are definitely a couple of bad seeds that would take advantage of that and intentionally misrepresent what people ignoring them say, knowing that their target couldn't respond.

The one thing I wonder, what happens if a DM takes you on board with a PbP game together with someone on your ignore list. It might get pretty confusing if there's an invisible PC playing in the game such that you can't read their actions but they are having an effect on the story nonetheless...
