Official Superman Poster

Gunn made a few good Guardians movie, and Suicide Squad was a riot. Neither of those are Superman, though, and I do not want a Superman movie that is full of the flavor of humor from either of those.
The humour is superficial, though - the underlying and important bit is that he understands heart and heroism and doing the right thing and caring about others, despite conflicts you might have with them. That's very clear from GotG, TSS and Peacemaker.

Take away or reduce the humour and you've got some extremely heartfelt and earnest movies, frankly. And indeed large parts of them are just that! Especially GotG 2 and 3. This is a man who managed to make Rocket Racoon into a compelling and sympathetic character, for goodness' sake!

It's obvious from what has been shown and said about the movie already that Gunn isn't going to have Supes cursing like a sailor or flipping off Green Lantern or something. It's already evident he understands Supes far better than Snyder/Goyer ever did, which was always a very superficial thing, where they were confused by heroism, and only really understood that Superman was powerful.

We'll see if he can contain himself, or succumbs to the temptation. The inclusion of Gardner suggests to me that he wants to keep his signature tone present.

Don't get me wrong: I am very hopeful, but I am also scared. I can't believe no one has gotten Supes right* since Superman: The Animated Series besides the freaking CW.

*Note: I like Man of Steel, and I live Cavill's SUperman boradly, but BvS was a travesty and JL was a mess.

It is kind of horrifying the Superman and Lois was by far the best Superman since the animated series. He doesn't seem like a hard character to nail!
Many people seem to think it's difficult to challenge Superman because he's so tough, as though the only kinds of problems he can engage with involve punching.

The answer, of course, is that you have to challenge him with something that's not about his powers -- have Lex Luthor buy the Daily Planet and prosecute Superman in the press. What's Superman going to do? Punch the First Amendment?

This is encouraging:

It’s not. I think the problem is two fold:

1) Modern “auteur” directors and producers who want to put their stamp on things. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Nolan was well matched for Batman. Snyder was way, way too cynical to ever do Superman right.

2) If TV does it well, movie studios have to not be the TV show, then. They have to distinguish themselves and be different because that was the TV show. This plays into #1 a bit but also goes back to an old divide between how TV and movies are perceived within Hollywood.
