D&D General Demetrios1453 Plays the Gold Box Games

A couple of quick observations.

I've only just noticed now that even Alias' icon has the ridiculous boob armor window. Someone actually took their time to make sure that a few skin-colored pixels made it into the design lol...

Also, the priestess there at the end sort of looks like the insane Norma Desmond at the end of Sunset Boulevard, with her wild crazy eyes and downturned lips. "All right, Mr Moander, I'm ready for my close-up!"

Also, no one has leveled since Baroness Bella did at the top of Dracandros' tower, two whole bosses ago! Thankfully, several characters are pretty close, and we have plenty of opportunity to gain XP here soon...

Why not "Bit of Moander"? It's the same number of symbols. I guess someone was making a pun with the Bit O' Honey candy?

In the novel, we find out the boob window is heavily enchanted to protect her from attacks. It's even more enchanted than the rest of her armor, as a literal trap for people who try to aim for that as her weak spot. Except for the weapon of her creator (a dagger I believe) that can pass through the enchantment without issue and kill her easily, as a sort of fail safe if she ever goes rogue.

Which is a hilariously overcomplicated way to try and justify the OOC decision to give her a boob window. o_O

That is the single most TSR novel thing I have ever heard.

Yeah, the authors of her second novel felt it necessary to give her an internal monologue about how much protection it actually gave even though it looks useless, because of all the remarks from readers after the first one was published.

In their defense, there's a good reason for that. Despite the fact it's featured very prominently on the cover of the first novel, Alias only wears it at the very end, when she's forced into it before a ritual sacrifice. The armor does make sense when you need to have your sacrifice (a) dressed for the occasion, and (b) have a nice open area over the heart you're going to plunge a dagger into. The fact that she kept wearing it into the second novel (again, it's on the cover) despite how it looked is what needed to be addressed at that point.

Yeah, even my teenage self found the boob armor to be ridiculous.

It was nice to see your strategy for the Bit o Moander (sweet and delicious with just a touch of corruption!). This always felt like the most difficult battle in the game to me.

I always hoarded Hold Monster scrolls and spells and unleashed them all for this fight. The odds of the monster saving were high, but if it failed you could coup de grace them in a single hit!

Yeah, of all the boss fights, I'd say this is the toughest, even over the fight with the final boss, probably because it has two consecutive stages, with some tough monsters in the second stage. If you mess up or if they get lucky, you're having to fight both all over again.

Bragir did try a cone of cold, but it did absolutely nothing due to their magic resistance (which is why I didn't mention it in the text). Just surrounding the BOMs with everyone hasted while using the wand is about as an effective strategy as any with all their immunities and resistances.

Of course, it's not the toughest battle in the game - there's a very infamous battle that you have to purposely explore around and find still yet to come.

Curse of the Azure Bonds (Part 33): The Pit of Moander (Part 4) - The Pit of Moander completed!

Well, let's go find the treasure Alias mentioned, and then get out of here!

We head towards the altar, only to have something block our path!

Screenshot 2025-03-01 210134.png

At this point, even though slugs aren't particularly dangerous, we choose to evade them.

We head behind the altar and use "SEARCH"

Screenshot 2025-03-01 210155.png

That's nice!

Screenshot 2025-03-01 210209.png

Not bad at all.

There are a couple of magic items as well, but only one that's important.

Screenshot 2025-03-01 210313.png

It basically will raise her pick locks by a few percentage points, but even that's helpful.

There is also a cleric scroll with some particularly useless spells on it (really, sticks to snakes?)

Screenshot 2025-03-01 210408.png

That's a bit helpful, as it seems to show the way out. We know the general area of where the exit is, but this gives us some useful detail. Kind of weird that this map is behind the altar though. Surely all the cultists would already know this. Maybe it was supposed to be given to a visitor who they later decided to sacrifice?

At this point, I decide to try to rest. It's dangerous, and we might be interrupted, but there will be a fairly tough battle to get out, and we may run into some random encounters along the way.

Screenshot 2025-03-01 210444.png

We luck out, and are able to complete our rest. As we're still sitting in the place we found the treasure, these games sometimes allow uninterrupted rest in a set encounter location. PoR did, but I'm not sure if that's the case here. Whatever the reason, we're able to heal up and memorize spells before we attempt our breakout.

Screenshot 2025-03-16 154623.png

After a quick save, we move out from behind the altar and head back south to the stairway to the upper level.

And... somehow we make it without any issues! I've done this many times before, and it always seems that there's a random encounter or two at least, but, nope, all the way to the stairs without harm!

Screenshot 2025-03-16 154743.png

Up we go!

We head north along the corridor, and then turn left.

Screenshot 2025-03-16 154855.png

We can see from the map we found behind the altar that we need to go through the door and then through a few more rooms to the exit.

We enter the first room, and...

Screenshot 2025-03-16 154933.png

It's a random encounter, but luckily the easiest type. No cultists slinging spells or shambling mounds with all their headaches...

Screenshot 2025-03-16 155005.png

Bragir is going to take the most efficient route in getting rid of them...

Screenshot 2025-03-16 155026.png

Screenshot 2025-03-16 155047.png

Bragir used fireball against vegepygmies. It's super effective!

As you can see, after that, there's not many left to deal with...

Screenshot 2025-03-16 155113.png

And, luckily, things align perfectly for Buffy to end this fight in a most satisfying manner...

Screenshot 2025-03-16 155219.png

That problem dealt with, we go through a couple more rooms...

Screenshot 2025-03-16 155349.png

Evade again. No need to fight the slugs - they don't give much XP and have no treasure.

After that, we head north into the final room before the exit. But, of course, the way is blocked.

Screenshot 2025-03-16 155431.png

Screenshot 2025-03-16 155444.png

I have no idea what that battle cry means or signifies.

Screenshot 2025-03-16 155504.png

Cultists, vegepygmies, and five shambling mounds. We need to clear out those cultists quickly before they can cast any spells, and then deal with the shambling mounds. The vegepygmies will almost certainly all go down as collateral damage as we take care of the rest.

And how best to deal with large numbers of cultists so they can't cast spells?

Screenshot 2025-03-16 155657.png

Both Bragir and Brin start casting. Brin goes first...

Screenshot 2025-03-16 155826.png

Then Bragir.

Screenshot 2025-03-16 155902.png

Well, that's certainly cleared out things a bit (other than the shamblers, who are annoyingly immune to fire damage)

Screenshot 2025-03-16 155916.png

However, they aren't immune to cold damage!

Screenshot 2025-03-16 160036.png

First Bragir...

Screenshot 2025-03-16 160106.png

Then Brin...

Screenshot 2025-03-16 160151.png

It's not much, but it does wear them down a bit. And by this point all the cultists have been taken down by spells or by my melee all lined up there. Now that we don't have to worry about being randomly held, time to focus on the shambling mounds!

Bragir begins sniping shambling mounds with magic missile now that party members are getting mixed in with the remaining foes...

Screenshot 2025-03-16 160420.png

And Brin moves up to start using the wand of defoliation.

Screenshot 2025-03-16 160530.png

Bragir snipes one with another magic missile...

Screenshot 2025-03-16 160603.png

And then Bant takes the last one out...

Screenshot 2025-03-16 160618.png

Nice! Our way out is secured! And we got a decent amount of XP!

Screenshot 2025-03-16 160630.png

Nothing exciting in terms of treasure. They all have magical ring mail like before, but that's just too heavy to carry around.

Screenshot 2025-03-16 160648.png

And we came out of the battle in pretty good shape! Bant and Alias were both engulfed by shambling mounds for a short time, and Alias definitely took some damage - but she's about to level! So she'll be back to max HP again once we level her up.

Screenshot 2025-03-16 160705.png

And so we head out the exit...

Screenshot 2025-03-16 160738.png

She gets her level and dips.

Screenshot 2025-03-16 160746.png

Thanks for the help, both of you! Even if you weren't optimized, you were still both light-years better than your old friend Akabar...

Screenshot 2025-03-16 160754.png

And... Yûlash is now inaccessible to us, just like Tilverton. For some reason, the designers really hated the idea of characters re-exploring old places.

Screenshot 2025-03-16 160805.png

Time to camp and rest!

Screenshot 2025-03-16 161003.png

We have several characters so close to gaining a level! But that will have to wait until we move on to the next section of the game, as we move north to visit the infamous city of Zhentil Keep itself!

Map of the Pit of Moander from the cluebook:

Screenshot 2025-03-16 161032.png

Also, I will be out of town on vacation starting later this week. So I'll won't be posting further here until after I get back in two weeks. Sorry, but Zhentil Keep will have to wait a short time, but the party will be visiting there as soon as possible afterwards!

(Also, glad I re-read this after posting, as I completely forgot to re-order the party now that Alias and Dragonbait are gone. Went back and did a quick party order adjustment. Much better than forgetting about it, and then starting up next time and getting into a battle with Buffy in the front when she wouldn't need to be!)

One owlbear uses its hug attack on Buffy, which basically makes her unable to do anything this round.

Poor Bant is having a really bad day, literally getting mauled since they are dishing out a significant amount of damage compared to us. The real problem is that the shambling mounds can engulf him, causing extra damage and stopping him from attacking until he's freed by the foe being damaged or killed. He uses a healing potion while being unable to attack, but that's barely a speed bump on the downward trajectory of his hit points. Brother Baltor throws out a healing spell...

Being hugged or engulfed only stops you moving. While it may appear you can't attack (because most melee attacks are done by 'moving' into the enemy), you can still attack using the Aim menu. Aim works for melee, not just ranged.

It's also possible (though very unintended and clearly cheating) to transfer items from Pool of Radiance to Curse of the Azure Bonds.
Last time I migrated from Pool of Radiance to Curse, I couldn't work out how to get CopyCurs.exe to work properly so I copied the files to the Curse\Save folder manually.

To transfer Items from Pool of Radiance to Curse of the Azure Bonds
Start the game
Add characters, Note that you have to select Pool when adding the characters. I guess it searches by file extension.
Save exit
Rename all the charactername.ITM files to CHRDATA1.SWG format.
Start game.
Most things work okay, but some go haywire. For example, ring of fire resistance seems to turn into a ring of wizardry.
