Alien: Earth | Official Trailer

"The Company" is a villain, yes, but typically an off-screen one (Prometheus being the most obvious exception). The best bits of the movies are typically about normal folk dealing with the xenomorphs.

Which is kind of my concern with this trailer. The tale of the company and the tale of xenomorphs reaching Earth are two absolutely huge, high level epics that the franchise has spent decades avoiding. Partially because it adds to the mystique of the franchise, and also because the movies are typically smaller scale stories. I'm worried this is biting off way more to chew than it can handle.
Based on Fargo, I trust Hawley to pull it off. Those stories are absolutely dripping in tension and unbelievably hateable villains, while still staying extremely human-scaled.

this also looks like theyre sending in Synths to face the Xenomorphs rather than 'normal folk', so this show is likely to be a very different experience to the movies - and indeed it looks more like the Resident Evil movie to me than classic Aliens.

Thats not a bad thing however

Why not? Complexity is exactly what long form storytelling is good at.

I'm not saying it's a death knell, either. But it's one thing to make a TV show that simply plays around with the established world of a movie. To try and surpass it like this just seems very ambitious to me. I suppose my feelings towards the show could be described as "Careful, Icarus."

I'll also admit my opinion was swayed more than a bit by the way the trailer made zero mention of Ridley Scott. But looking it up, it seems he does have a Executive Director Producer credit. I don't know what level of involvement that means, but it's reassuring.

"Executive Producer", in this context, likely just means "got paid inordinate amounts of money to use the property", though it could also mean, "paid inordinate amounts of money to have show made."

Ridley Scott doesn’t own the IP.

Did a bit more reading and apparently Ridley Scotts only involvement is via being the owner of Production company "Scott Free". He said in interviews "Where it's going now, I think I've done enough, and I just hope it goes further,"

He's previously said that he thought the franchise had dropped off after 4 (Alien Ressurection) and that he did Prometheus to try and revive the series.

Take that as you will. Prometheus and the others after it are probably indicators to where its going - but Scott is retired

Romulus reinvigorated the franchise a bit. I will be curious to see which sort of tone they reach for.
