How? Did the map you purchased have layers?
The map don't have layers, but it's presented as three versions:
  • Map with labels (names for places, regions, geographic formations, etc) and markers (marking towns, cities, dungeons, sites of interest, roads, trails, etc).
  • Map with markers, but no labels.
  • Fully unlabeled and unmarked map.

Each of these are present in three resolutions: hi-res, low-res and adapted for vtts.

If you layer the three versions on a image editor like CPS or PS you can use the eraser tool to show only what you want to.

Exactly. You open the three maps as layers into a single image, with the labeled map on the top layer. Then you erase the labels you don't want, revealing the pristine map in the lower layer. I used GIMP. If you want to remove one of the map markers (the circles, dots, and squares), you have to delete it from the top two layers.

The one difficulty I've run into is that there are a few places where map markers that I want to erase overlap roads that I don't want to erase. Since there's no version of the maps included here that has the roads but not the markers, this is tricky. Luckily, the maps actually do have the roads invisibly embedded as paths, which allows you to get a good result with some patience, but it requires a bit more technical know-how.

Might have to buy the pdf.

Did some experimenting.
A0 Darksun map. DM screen and A3 art for scale.

Cost less than 9 usd.
Free beyond map Faerun. 40 cents to print A3.

Darksun+Faerun A3 test runs.

So nice big map will be 8 usd for the pdf and around 9 to print.

Some of my players want maps as well so can get price per unit down.

Yeah I agree, I'm sorry, but I'm not paying Mike's prices for a paper map, when I can just get a better print using more durable materials from various companies. I get supporting artists and all that, but I don't have unlimited resources to spend on something that fragile.

The site show that size vinyl banner is $135.

Thanks to this thread and some sharing the cloth map site earlier in the thread.
