If by "us" you mean the developed west, maybe, but people around the world were dealing with totalitarianism and climate disaster during the Hall and Oates years, they were just brown.

Certainly not as big as Baldurs Gate, but I'd say that Dark Sun had a few video game adaptations that cemented the setting as unique (as opposed to the few Greyhawk video games which are just kinda flavorless).

As far as Darksun goes I think the novels has the bigger impact.

Voted Other for totally self desire reasons: I want to see a 5.24 work up of the L series starting with Secret of Bone Hill as a tier 1 sandbox like how they did the Saltmarsh U series.
