This episode may be best in class for medieval warfare on film.

As interesting as the flashback was, I was worried it was going to swallow the whole episode. I was glad to see we popped back to get the rest of the fight.

And man, if that battle hadn't gone the way it did, Game of Thrones might not have even happened. And so it goes.

I watched an interminably long monotone YouTube video of someone going through all of the combat in the background of the combat, and it appears [redacted] actually gets a mace to the back of the head twice on camera.
 

That was pretty intense. I thought the violence was a little too over the top to be believably survivable for the two primary combatants, but it was exciting as hell to watch.
