Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall

Dungeons & Dragons Announces Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, New Adventure Book Featuring Red Wizards of Thay

Another observation: assuming that is Szass Tam on the standard cover, his forehead tattoos have been changed to include the Covenant of the Grave symbol. These haven’t been portrayed consistently in past illustrations.

This iconography doesn’t just suggest that the PCs might be Thayan, it suggests that they might be associated with Szass Tam’s faction.

They were very much “magic” versions of those classes, especially the ones in the Mystic UA. Consider the paladin, that was very much the sort of wizard police you might find in Thay.
Less Thayand more Agalrond, I would say. The the ING seems to be related to the Arcane Empires region at large which makes sense of the naming convention of Arcane Empire they made last year if this was in the pipeline as a followup to the main campaign Setting.

I think you are letting your own desire to see Agalrond in the game obscure your better judgment. I can’t see any wizard from Agalrond belonging to the same faction of Szass Tam.

I don't particularly have a desire for Agalrond, at all. I just think that it is what the tealeaves say, based on what we can see of the Adventure Campaign set into he recently, and rather oddly, renamed "Arcane Empires" region. Which has more Elven forests with Arcane Archers, Thay or Agalrond? Which has a strong association with Mystara, the goddess of magic, and her Arcane Domain Clerics, the country which worships Mystara or the country which has banned all Clerics? Which has has a magic academy open to all in Faerun, Thay or Agalrond...?

Alternatively. Which country has more Tattoo d Warriors, Rashemen or Thay? Which has more Barbarians, Thay or Rashemen?

I think you are reading way too much much into that. Unless it means Thay has already conquered the entire region. It’s not like “arcane” isn’t a word that is used pretty much all the time in D&D.

Funny you should mention that. Read the background for the Covenant of the Grave faction (bottom right corner of the photo), then look at Szass Tam’s tats.

Remember we are talking about two small books, one of which is crunch and the other is an adventure. There isn’t going to be space for oodles of setting lore in either.

Maybe the B&G version will add more setting lore, and/or there will be “DLC” like the FR books.

Sure, but they decided to name the region with three large Magocracies the Arcane Empires for the first time while they were working on a followup in that region called d Arcana Unleashed. Hardly seems like a coincidence. Of the 18 Subclasses tested, most fit Agalrond or Rashemen, while one fits Thay. I'm sure Thayan PCs are something they have in mind, but he PCs versus Tam and his Red Wizards seems pretty obvious here.

The standard icon for the Necromancy School, yes.

A 192 page book with less than 100 pages of Crunch.

There is nothing to connect Arcana Unleashed to that region aside from the use of a word that is slightly more common in D&D than “the”. It’s a crunch book not a setting book.

Deadfall mentions Arcana Unleashed, but Arcana Unleashed makes no mention of Deadfall, or Thay, or the Forgotten Realms. I’m pretty sure a Forgotten Realms setting book would mention the Forgotten Realms on the cover!

Deadfall is exemplar material - it demonstrates how to apply general material from AU to your setting (in such a way that doesn’t require you to own it!)

Nope it ain’t. It’s still a stylised omega, but a very specific style. But I’m actually talking about the bit that mentions being trained by clerics.

You seem to be missing the main point: they renamed the region to the "Arcane" Empires just as they were working on this "Arcana Unleashed" Campaign Adventure and tie-in material.

Does it not mention it? We know thst the book is set to be ~192 pages and has ~100 pages of Crunch. Because it is co-branded with the Arcana Unleashed Adventure, some of the remaining half of the book tying into the Adventure seems likely.

Sure, they are co-branded products, with DM and player material for PCs to tie into a full campaign...set in a given region with lots of magic users with two player friendly Magocracies facing off against the primary antagonists of the whole Setting.
