Arcana Unleashed

Dungeons & Dragons Announces Arcana Unleashed, New Magic-Themed Sourcebook at $49.99 Price Point

Well, any Class they do want to be able to be used broadly and not be too specific, sure. But contextually, it is pretty clear what they are doing with this.
Things can be used for more than one thing. And given the marketing role of UA, if Dark Sun isn’t until early 2027 (or they decided not to proceed) then everyone will have forgotten it by then.

Dark Sun requires psionics. Psionics does not require Dark Sun.

Much like the Artificer, they want the psion to be used for Dark Sun, but not ONLY for Dark Sun. And while psionics (like artifice) existed on other settings prior to the creation of Dark Sun (Eberron), those settings are the showcase for them due to their prominent use in the setting.

Dark Sun was created before Eberron. But psionics was in Greyhawk before either of those.

But all these vintage settings are unknown to the vast majority of current players, so it doesn’t matter where they choose to showcase something. It’s just “look at this shiny new thing”.

One thing the majority of current players will be familiar with is Stranger Things, so that will be the main cultural reference point with regards to psionics.

To be clear Dark Sun: Psion :: Eberron: artificer. I'm making a comparison to how important tht class is to the respective setting. Greyhawk HAD psionics, but they were in no way integral to the setting.

So? Does that mean we should put warforged in the Dragonlance book, kender in the Dark Sun book or Purple Dragon Knights in the Ravenloft book? It's all just shiny new things so it doesn't matter where any of it goes...

Is psionics even part of Stranger Things? I don't have Netflix so I only know of it though cultural osmosis. I barely felt like real D&D is even a factor and all the entities just have names from the Monster Manual rather than being the real mind flayers or Venca...

Yes, the real monsters on the show are psionic interdimensional Lovecraftian space aliens. And one of the main characters is a Psion. Which the children interpret through AD&D.

Very much so. The shenanigans are kicked off by government experiments to give children psionic powers, and one of the main characters has powerful psionic abilities which are pretty much the only effective way to fight the monsters.

It’s not a show based on D&D, it’s a show in which the protagonists play D&D and use it to interpret the weird-ass psychic stuff going on.
