Free League Publishing is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its dark fantasy RPG Symbaroum with a new Kickstarter that offers a reorganized core rulebook set plus a brand new campaign setting. Launching on May 19th, the Symbaroum Anniversary Kickstarter will feature two products - revised core rulebooks that organizes the original rulebooks into three books, plus the brand new City States of Vendilyn – A Ravaged Realm book.

Symbaroum is a dark fantasy RPG with an emphasis on gritty and deadly gameplay. The core mechanic uses a D20 roll under system, with additional modular rules that allows players to customize their game easily. A 5E variant of the game was also released.

The full description of the books being offered for the Kickstarter are below:

  • Core Rulebook: Provides everything needed to bring Symbaroum to the table, including a tutorial adventure, guidelines for creating homebrew scenarios, and an introduction to the dark and foreboding Davokar region.
  • Gamemaster’s Guide: Offers advanced guidance for running Symbaroum, including support for campaign building, adventure creation, and optional rules for large-scale battles, advanced traps, and social scheming.
  • Davokar Creature Codex: A detailed bestiary presenting the monsters and people players will encounter on their travels, featuring updated practical stat blocks while building on the legacy of the award-winning Monster Codex.
  • City States of Vendilyn – A Ravaged Realm: A full-color hardcover volume introducing the City States of Vendilyn as a campaign setting where survivors struggle to endure after the once-peaceful realm was devastated by the malevolent elves of Duskwood.

Interesting. I've often used Symbaroum as an example of a way to provide adventures in the form of a Big Campaign alongside campaign setting material (a technique the people behind Symbaroum also used in Mutant: Undergångens Arvtagare). However, the disadvantage of that approach (at least if you have escalating adventures which you want in this model) is that at the end, you've often "used up" the setting. So rebooting the same game but with a different setting seems like a convenient way of resetting that cycle.

I usually like their settings but here I'm also very interested to see how they've improved the system. Parts of Symbaroum 1e were rougher than they should have been.
This is what piques my curiosity. The best part of Symbaroum (outside of the art, obviously) has always been the evocative setting. The game system, less so. To re-do the former while retaining the later to me seems like a non-starter, yet Free League are no fools, so I'm curious what they have in mind.
