what temples SHOULD look like

a few miles down the road form me an "india cultural temple and center" is being built. a crew of indians has been brought in to do the embellishment and i go visit them frequently to be amazed at what they are doing and how. i have become quite friendly with a few of them, despite the fact that they don't all speak english.

their work is done in masonry cement and is exemplary of what i think d+d temples should be like, thickly ornamented and full of idols.

i will include a few pics to share this awesome inspiration in my neighborhood. i wish oyu could meet them too, they are great folks.

i think i will take them some pots soon, for the head dude who let me take pics and doesn't tire of my questions and some for some of the grunt laborers who tolerate me and offer to share their lunches. :)

What is that material? "Masonry" seems too general.

Do they carve, or use molds?

it is portland cement with somehting in it, i use it myself, just not as well :)

they lay it in pretty wet and form it with their fingers and some purchased and constructed tools.

it is amazing to watch, and they are pretty free with sharing info.

i have a friend with a digital video camera and they have agreed to let me film the creation of a figure, i will let you know when it is viewable :)

Is that Hanuman and Vishnu guarding the gate?

i honestly don't know. :) we talk about good cement/sand mixtures, and finishes, we talk glazes and clay, we talk about building sculpture oputdoors and how to manage shade and rain, but we haven't discussed religion at all. and somehow that never seemed odd till you asked this.

i am hanging out with temple builders and we discuss building, but never religion.

*sigh* now i have all new questions to bug them with
:D
