what temples SHOULD look like

Pretty cool - thanks for sharing. I think this is an excellent example of the need to reinforce spoken description with visual aids. One could never do an average D&D temple justice with spoken word alone. So much mood and grandeur can be conveyed with one good picture.

I think it would be a good idea to compile images that would be helpful for D&D into an online database. Google Image searches can take so long to sift through for just the perfect picture.

Me and Suzi went to India in 2001-2002, and its awesome. You can walk down streets and see people making sculpture for decoration right in front of you.

Its one thing i really miss with our mass production techniques, ornamentation is, IMHO, what allows we humans to interact with a structure. To turn it into art from necessity as opposed to just necessity.

Just look at the window below. Carved from a single piece of marble.... its even more pretty up close.. :)

it always makes me happy to see hindu temples built indian style here in the states. Too many of em are converted warehouses or churches, and i just don't get the same vibe there, ya know?

And yes, it looks like Hanuman and Vishnu, although i dont know why they would be gate guards. Where is this temple located anyway?

BTW, alsih2o, next time you talk to them, ask if its a shiva or a vishnu temple, and ask the origin of their community. North indian and South indian temples are WAY different.

great pics, btw =)

exactly, and this place is taking on an awesome vibe, they have invited me to come to a service so i can see the inside as well and you know i am all over that :)

the temple is just east of memphis, right at the edge of the county.

i will ask what kind of church it is, we tend to talk to each other as sculptors, not as religious folks, i will try and get all this info as well :)

Next Question...

Well after you've learned the Vedas, can you please ask them if there are any other temples like this in the US.

It could make a great roadtrip.

Vedas. one d =)

And there are a bunch of temples like this. Livermore in california, another one down in southern california (santa barbara or something, i think), one in massachusetts near boston, one in central pennsylvania, and more spread out through the country. Generally they tend to be south indian style.

The two d's was a typo. Really... ;)

Thank you! This is the information I needed to make googling easier!

Livermore
Santa Barbara
The one near Boston seems to be in Ashland, but has no good web site.
