This is the Quickstart Guide for Mythomachus: The Role-Playing Game. It contains a preview of everything that we have modified in 5e along with a full level-5 adventure and pre-made characters.
Mythomachus: The Role-Playing Game is set in a world where The Highlander meets The Witcher and historical events become one with Greek folklore and mythology.
This Tabletop Role Playing Game, based on the best-selling graphic novel published by Nerdula Creative Lab, and illustrated by Yiannis -RUBUS- Rubulias, utilizes the 5e rules system to introduce you to its unique setting filled with history, myths and tradition.
Set just before the Greek Revolution of 1821 AD, in a land full of strife and turmoil, you are bound to protect humanity from the creatures that roam the night and thrive in darkness. Seal your place in History as a legendary hero, a Mythomachus! But who or what are the Mythomachi? They are immortals who use the essence of the mythical creatures they destroy, to empower their abilities and longevity .
In our game, when a character slays a mythical creature for the first time, they face an important dilemma; absorb the creature’s essence and embrace the destiny of an everliving monster slayer or remain mortal and follow down their path of Legacy to make their name echo through myths and legends forever. Robust mechanics are invented in order to make this dilemma meaningful, with distinct ways to play your character.
You may choose one of the 8 new classes, specifically tailored to fit the historical era of the 1800s, each with two distinct subclasses for a more diverse gameplay.
- The Archon is not exactly human, as they carry the blood of gods or demigods in their veins. Always caught between myth and mankind, they carry a burden no mere mortal would ever understand.
- The Charlatan uses deception and clever tactics to get the most out of every situation.
- The Crypthound sees the world as an ancient riddle. Armed with masterful agility and a sharp mind, they delve into the deepest ruins to uncover ancient relics.
- The Enforcer is a warrior of discipline, duty and unwavering resolve. The hand that delivers justice and the wall that holds back anarchy.
- The Magus is born with the ability to shape the Weave of Magick, bending reality to their will. They control the wild force trapped into their human body through discipline.
- The Occultist denies the mundane nature of reality, studying the intricacies of the Great Work, aiming to become the perfect being, breaking the rules of Magick.
- The Outlaw is a relentless force that refuses to be tamed, a hushed whisper in a room of shadows constantly fighting against tyranny and oppression.
- The Wayfarer is an unseen hunter and seeker of places untouched by time. Wayfarers are masters of the land, legendary pathfinders and impeccable hunters.
Our game offers a large variety of supernatural adversaries through its Bestiary. Each mythical creature is strongly tied to various traditional local tales and different aspects of oral folk history. Thus, the GM is free to choose which of these folklore traits are there to help or mislead the players, adding to the game’s atmosphere of mystery and fear of the unknown or the uncanny.
Moreover, the spells and magic of “Mythomachus" work in their own way, as magic, or Magick as it is called in this world, functions in dangerous and unpredictable ways. Whenever a magick is weaved, there’s always a chance that a magickal mishap may occur, breaking parts of reality, or the weaver’s body. Each of the magicks included in “Mythomachus” has its own unique magickal mishap, which will always pose a threat to the characters.
Finally, inside the pages of this book one will find details about the current state of every part of Greece just before the rebellion starts, with the characters being able to participate in historical events. They will walk among heroic figures of history, create their own version of events or even reveal the hidden truth that has never been mentioned in history books.
