How Fantastical Do You Like Your Fantasy World?

I used to think that same way but I've come around on it. The mundane is the players' real lives. That's where the contrast is. It's not compare-contrast between two fictional elements, one mundane the other fantastical. You'll always get a wow when it's something new and wild to the player...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Not related to the above. It's always so disappointing to see people you admire talk up people you despise. It never results in thinking better of the person you despise. But it always results in thinking worse of the person you admire.

OSR Video: State of the OSR (Gary Con '25 Panel)

Good panel. Were there any good questions and answers? I turned it off after the first rambling audience question.

How Fantastical Do You Like Your Fantasy World?

The weirder the better. Realistic or mundane settings are boring. This reminds me of the gonzo thread awhile back and it’s basically the same answer here. Eberron, Mystara, Hollow World, Dark Sun, Spelljammer, Planescape, Sword World, Mushoku Tensei, DCC RPG, MCC RPG, XCC RPG, Gamma World...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Not related to the sudden turn of this thread. You missed the point entirely. I can only assume it’s intentional at this point. Looking forward to a bit of schadenfreude later.

Dungeons & Dragons SRD 5.2 Is Officially Live

There's a vast gulf between the word "feywild" and all the associated lore attached to that word. The word is in the CC-BY SRD. The lore is not. People confusing the word for the lore are going to create a lot of problems for themselves and others.

Dungeons & Dragons SRD 5.2 Is Officially Live

For some reason group checks were removed from the 5.2 SRD. Were they also removed from the new PHB?

Dungeons & Dragons SRD 5.2 Is Officially Live

And the winner of best addition to the SRD goes to the first section, Rhythm of Play. Given that exact cycle is the fundamental basis of all RPGs it's nice to have one of the better encapsulations available in the CC.

Dungeons & Dragons SRD 5.2 Is Officially Live

They can use the name "Strahd" and whatever bits of lore are specifically included in the actual SRD, but using any IP not specifically included in the SRD is going to get you a visit from the Pinkertons and a gaggle of lawyers. All that lore you have in your head about Strahd was not released...

Bots aren't that persistent. Man, just let it go.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

It can. Depends on the joke and the audience. A whole lot of people are actively hunting to be offended. Weirdly you tend to find what you’re looking for in that regard. Yet another problem caused by social media.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

It’s the only way some people are capable of communicating. The internet, especially social media, is partly to blame. But it’s clear a lot of people took kindness-compassion as their dump stat. Apparently a lot of people think kindness-compassion is a weakness rather than a strength.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Yeah, it's a huge generational shift. Anime is king. My kid is a few years older than your oldest and is into Star Trek, Star Wars, Monty Python, Doctor Who, and D&D along with all the anime stuff. It's not all my fault, but I'm a long-time fan of all the nerd stuff including anime. But most of...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

    It's still a sandbox.

D&D General Do You Play Out Every Combat?

Exactly. That's really one of the major keys to keeping combats fun and interesting. Goals and motivations. If the only goal-motivation is "kill the other side" your combat is going to be boring. Only fanatics and mindless undead fight to the last. Everyone wants to get home to their friends and...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

Depends entirely on what you're going for as a referee. Do you want to maintain the strict integrity of your prep, shoot for verisimilitude, or let the PCs have an easy win? Keep the dungeon the same. Do you want to challenge the PCs regardless of what you originally prepped for that...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

It’s who makes the choice and when. The referee designs a linear adventure ahead of time for the players to follow. If the referee also removes choice, it devolves into a railroad. The players choosing to pursue their goals in a straight line does not make their choices a linear adventure.

As long as the broader campaign structure is still recognizably a sandbox, yes.

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

No. A sandbox is not some kind of quantum superposition the game is in only when the PCs-players are deciding between hooks to pursue.

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

It’s a perfectly useable term. The people who insist on fixating or taking it too literally will either find similar “problems” with the new term or force people to use overblown, hyper-specific nonsensical jargon to say the exact same thing. That is to say, the problem isn’t the term it’s the...
