Worlds of Design: Human vs. Superhuman

Yes, the "stormtroopers cant shoot straight" meme, has always been one that irritated me, and I hate how the Mandelorian has taken it to new and ridiculous heights (otherwise a good show). They are really starting to look like total mooks. Most of the killing they did happened off screen in the...

    Adventure gamers wanted.

Hey I appreciate your support! I actually just kicked off an AD&D game last night, and it couldnt have gone better. It was great to see 5E players experiencing OSR play with attack matrices and group initiative and really getting into it. They seemed to enjoy the added complexity (we even used...

D&D Movie/TV The D&D Movie Has Begun Filming!

I hope the movie has on screen dice rolls, like on Beyond ;)

    Adventure gamers wanted.

If you enjoy dungeon crawls, exploring exotic fantasy locations, fighting monsters, and believe that less is more when it comes to roleplaying, then our group is for you. If you are frustrated with players who groan when you say "roll initiative" and would rather spend 3 hours roleplaying with...

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

Truth. Especially when people are usually just happy to be in a gaming group at first and then gradually become malcontent as they realize the game isnt what they want.

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

One rpg game I was in recently had players that hated dungeon crawls but would spend a 4 hour session walking around town talking to every npc in sight with no real direction and even roleplayed doing laundry. That's not playing dnd. That's playing house.

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

I think this thread highlights what I was getting at in my recent thread about role vs roll play. I think the perception of popularity of one over the other is largely based on your personal experience, and trends come and go. Right now, a massive influx of players new to the game have been...

D&D 5E WizKids Announces Largest Tiamat Miniature Ever

unless your playing pathfinder, he rolls a 1 initiative and then rolls a 1 saving throw vs ottos irresistible dance and dies the dumbest death possible in fantasy roleplay (yes this has happened to me)

D&D General What's your Campaign Success Rate?

I would say it is pretty rare that my groups stay completely cohesive more than a year. Life gets in the way, schedules conflict, etc. As far as campaigns I have completed: As a dm: 3.5 the cormyr, shadowdale, anauroch trilogy - completed (not a very popular series but I had the right players...

D&D General The adventure game vs the role-playing game

I like this definition. but i do think that the term "roleplay" has been conflated with acting in character. For example, there are many youtube videos entitled "how to get your players to roleplay" and what they are talking about is encouraging them to act in character. These videos actually...

D&D General The adventure game vs the role-playing game

Yes this is pretty much what im getting at. My intention was not really to start the "roleplay vs rollplay, which is better?" debate, which i agree has been ongoing for decades and is entirely subjective, but to discuss that, from my experience there are currently two entirely different games...

D&D General The adventure game vs the role-playing game

Not unless they want to. In fact, In my game I tend to describe instead of act, as I think it actually leads to the type of immersion I am going for. Example: If I say "You hit the orc with your arrow, he screams in pain and clutches at his chest, and falls down" you imagine this happening in a...

D&D General The adventure game vs the role-playing game

Thats great im glad you are able to find an enjoyable balance. My experience is that more and more, it is getting harder to find players that want to balance adventure with roleplay.

D&D General The adventure game vs the role-playing game

It seems we are at about the same point. I confess I lean to the adventure game side myself. Old school gamers like me (playing since 1st edition) tend to lean this way. Its really just in the last few years that I have seen a mass influx of the roleplayers who groan when you say "roll initiative"

D&D General The adventure game vs the role-playing game

I would be interested in everyone's take on this. As we all know, all players want different things from d&d and other rpgs, the DMG does a pretty good job of laying this out on page 6 - Know Your Players section. But I have noticed that more and more, over the past few years, players at the...

D&D 5E Do You Prefer Sandbox or Party Level Areas In Your Game World?

I dont think I have ever run a party game. So I guess Sandbox. Truthfully Sandbox games tend to be as linear as railroad, they just have the illusion of choice. Thus, the party rarely runs into anything they cant handle.
