1e thief was one of my favorite classes. They could do a lot of things fighters couldn't (or could do things better than other classes could: move silently, find traps, pick locks, etc.). It was just a lot of fun being the guy that quietly sneaked up on the opponent and backstabbed him before he...
Agreed. My game, death is uncommon I guess, but game is lethal at times. Characters die. NPCs die. Everyone dies. Think Elric saga, Game of Thrones, Conan, etc.
In my game, we turned Raise Dead into a ritual (kind of a cross between 3.x incantations and the 4e ritual). Requires a sacrifice (animal or humanoid) of a certain HD/level...kind of that "life for a life" type thing. So, makes Raise Dead available, just not always viable or possible. (There's...
The knife part true. The horse part, you can fix.
DM: You fall from your horse. I'm rolling 10d6 for damage.
Player: Wait! What!!!??????
DM: It was a big horse.
Yep. Just 'cause it's been with us basically forever. No real rules effect I guess, unless you count class restrictions (paladin, monk, assassin 1e, etc)....but even then, that's just a restriction, not really a rules effect I guess.
If they grant a class bonus to the rogue for perception type skills, then it fixes the problem with the cleric and his high Wis. Same with granting the rogue a class bonus for disarming traps so he doesnt have to call in the high Int wizard.
Not a huge fan of what's in the article. Maybe for some spells and some monsters perhaps, but not across the board. The medusa, for example, your character looks at it, save or turn to stone. Done. Not 'save or you're slowed. Save again or you're slowed even more. Save for the tenth time and...
Yep. Great idea to bring it back. And here's a link along those lines (kinda). Tomb of Horrors, small space crawlway (about mid-way down the page at the link below), thief decides to start firing off a wand of wonder...player rolls fireball...
Yep. And this is why we adopted the cleric rules from 2e and basically did away with the generic cleric. 2e specialty clerics really made the class feel different depending on what patron was worshipped.
Here ya go, in no particular order...
1 - Original 1e DMG cover with the efreeti
2 - Emirikol the Chaotic, 1e DMG
3 - A Paladin in Hell, 1e PHB
4 - Great Green Devil Face, 1e Tomb of Horrors
5 - Original 1e PHB cover with the idol statue
6 - Grazzt, 1e MM2
7 - Rakshasha, 1e MM1
8 - Queen of the...
Yep. Agree. I don't think we have to worry about the stat bonuses. I believe it was one of the leaked playtest reports (@ 4chan) that mentioned stat bonuses follow the same progression introduced in 3.x
Yep. All of this, especially the limiting available options. If some race, class, whatever doesn't fit. It doesn't fit. DM can decide whether to try and make it fit, or just draw the line and say "no" (which I've done both and have no problems doing either)
Same here. Played since pre 1e days, switched to each new system at some point. Tried 4e. Disliked it a lot for various reasons and stayed with 3.5.
And we'll give the 5e rules a look. Try 'em. If they don't work for us, we'll simply keep on with what we're doing.
