    D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores

Here's a slightly different take, adding in the Magic Defense idea. 7 Ability Scores Resilience (Con) Accuracy (Dex) Power (Str) Defense Spell Accuracy (Int) Spell Power (Cha) Spell Defense (Wis) Constitution Constitution / Resilience is unchanged. Weapon Attacks Weapon attacks all use...

    D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores

Fair enough. That's a good thing to point out. This is against same-level enemies rather than minions. I think you are right, that one die size rather than two will be more balanced.

    D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores

I see what you are saying. However, what about Shatter? It has a 10 ft radius sphere, making it likely easier to place without hitting allies than fireball, and one of the least-resisted damage types. If it kept pace with other spells in damage, it would be simply amazing. But yeah, area shape...

    D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores

Yes, this is the idea, but you make some good points toward needing to refine it. You make a good point about getting too much out of a 1st-level slot, and pointing out the proficiency scaling. Let's presume that it is ok to say that a caster gets better even at 1st-level spells later in the...

    D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores

Interesting. No, I haven't played 3.X either. 5e is my only D&D experience. I feel like it would be better if physical AC were separated from Dex and Str, or used both Dex and Str. Very off point, but now I'm imagining a game where Wisdom gives its own hit point pool: to defeat an enemy, you...

    D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores

I haven't played 4e. How does each come into play? I like this. Magic AC/RC = 10 + Wis Magic (not magical) armor would be important to get, and could be combined (or not) with regular armor. (Robes?) Maybe there would be no saving throws against spells: spells would all be attack rolls (Int)...

    D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores

This would merely be a guideline for modifying spells. We could add a clarification: If the spell imposes a condition, decrease the die size by one step.

    D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores

I have an idea in my head of characters having a Spell AC. But also, without other changes, Wisdom would still be very important for Perception and other skills, much more so that Intelligence. Spells are tricky, for sure.

    D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores

Yeah, I am unsure of that. Although mostly it should be something that you calculate as you level. I was trying to make "Spell power" a useful idea while keeping the damage consistent with current spells.

Just that all spells use Wis saves. No more Dex, Con, Str saves, etc.

    D&D 5E Rethinking Ability Scores

I have three goals in my head: 1) balance the abilities in importance with each other 2) make it easier to explain character creation to new players 3) keep the power level consistent with the game as written My ideas probably don't go very far in addressing any of the above. But to start off...

    D&D 5E Multiple Concentration

I recognize that concentration exists as a balancing mechanic to prevent spell combinations from becoming too powerful. However, there are so many concentration spells that many of them are hard to ever justify using when their power pales in comparison to the other options. Playing a...

    D&D 5E Multiple Concentration

Inspired by 'Combo' Spells to increase action economy, bypass concentration, and trying to stop hijacking it: What if you could concentrate on multiple spells, but their effects combined for only a limited time? Multiple Concentration You may concentrate on multiple spells, but their power is...

D&D 5E Changing the alchemist - if I remove the mechanical servant...

This raises the question: If a 20th level Artificer isn't the guy making the high-end magic items (very rare, legendary...), where do they come from?

D&D 5E Changing the alchemist - if I remove the mechanical servant...

I like the idea. Definitely up the spellcasting to 1/2 caster. Other ideas include: 1) Blessing of the Forge and Artisan's Blessing from the Cleric Forge Domain would fit the Artificer very well and help make it somewhat more competitive. I would even consider making them improve at higher...

    D&D 5E Determining an animal's attack stat

Though technically you can't tell, almost all beasts use Strength for all of their attacks. Mostly, only flying beasts use Dexterity, but there are other exceptions. Also, comparing with similar beasts, all other cats--Cats, Lions, Tigers, and Saber-Toothed Tigers--use Strength. It is safe to...

D&D 5E How much range is enough?

What if ranges were shortened, to make it more substantial what weapon you choose, but an extra-long range was added: Range A weapon that can be used to make a ranged Attack has a range in parentheses after the ammunition or thrown property. The range lists two numbers. The first is the...

D&D 5E How much range is enough?

The general consensus, then, is that long range doesn't usually matter. Is there a way to shorten weapon ranges to make them broadly significant while still retaining access to an extra-long range option for the edge cases?

D&D 5E How much range is enough?

Elsewhere I have been discussing options for making weapon choice more consequential, and hopefully interesting. In your experience, how significant is range, and what range is significant? Does it impact you in actual gameplay if your ranged weapon can shoot 600 feet? How important is this in...
