D&D (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

What is "feature complete" when it comes to a game system for simulating fantasy worlds? Why does the lack of monster creation rules stop D&D from being feature complete? Would it be feature complete with monster creation rules but with spell creation rules still being left out? When evaluating...

D&D General Hold Back the Dead - Free Digital D&D Adventure Coming 4th Feb

This is now available to read. Edit: Well, that was short. The adventure is basically a "protect the battlements" scenario with three waves of combat. If you've been excitedly waiting for an adventure which highlights the various schemes of the Red Wizards, this will be a disappointment. I've...

D&D (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

It is true that that outcome (them giving up) doesn't give the result you or I would like to see. I would love some working monster creation guidelines, and while we're at it, also spell, magic item, feat and class creation guidelines. I would love to see these, even though I'm not likely to use...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

That was almost the approach they took with the last version of Gamma World. It has the D&D logo slapped on to it and was basically the 4e engine, with slight tweaks.

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

I apologise! I certainly did not mean it to come across that way. It seemed relevant to the larger topic of WotC no longer wanting put statblocks for playable races in the Monster Manual for (it seems) cultural sensitivity reasons, but in retrospect I can see how it came across as a dig...

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

But this isn't considered a new edition, is it?

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

Probably the intention is for their Monsters of the Multiverse race/species entry to become the default place to find them. As you point out, they aren't mentioned at all in the PHB, and they are mentioned in the DMG only in the context of the belt of dwarvenkind and as an example resident in...

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

This is a thread about the "removal" of orcs from the Monster Manual, which as I understand it, has been done because it is now viewed as problematic to position them as a uniformly evil species. QuentinGeorge drew a parallel between this and the inclusion of humans in the 2nd Edition Monstrous...

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

Um, I don't think it really helps make your point that having humans in the Monstrous Manual "worked perfectly fine", when the screenshot you used includes terminology that would generally be considered offensive today.

D&D 5E Question for folks who use D&D Beyond: How well does it work with the new rules?

An issue we had in a recent game is that Exhaustion penalties do not seem to have been implemented. If a character has levels of Exhaustion, D&D Beyond doesn't seem to apply any sort of penalty to any of the die rolls.

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

Oh, I'm very much aware that my gaming options are limited by my choice of operating system. But it does speak to SlyFlourish's point that a VTT that doesn't run in a browser is going to immediately reduce the potential paying user base. My gaming group (which spans five cities and two...

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

Specifically, it requires installation on a PC running Windows 10. I would love to have put my Alpha testing invite from back in October to good use, but I am a Mac user so I can't.

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

I have never worried about D&D failing. Option 1: D&D keeps doing well, and there continues to be a steady stream of D&D things for me to spend money on. Option 2: D&D fails, and I suddenly have more money. Pathologically optimistic me just isn't seeing a problem here. Both options are great!

D&D General Hold Back the Dead - Free Digital D&D Adventure Coming 4th Feb

Oh! I didn't realize that this was that promotional adventure. That's good to know. Are you perhaps thinking of the Lair Assault series? D&D Encounters were closer to traditional long-form adventures, although each installment was split into a bunch of smaller sessions. It is a pity that the...

Why Dungeons & Dragons Isn't Putting Out a Campaign Book in 2025

Me neither. I do note that D&D Adventurer is also available in Italy, so maybe expensive, limited-run, collectable magazines are a British and Italian thing. As a complete aside, I've just noticed that the Italian subscription comes with a D&D mug, which wasn't part of the UK offer. I feel robbed!

Dungeons & Dragons Teases New Campaign Settings

I would be very happy to get a Manual of the Multiverse that was a tour of not just the planes, but which also covered a bunch of the lesser known or harder to redo settings, like Birthright, Mystara, Dark Sun and Jakandor. Obviously that would mean that none of them was covered in enormous...

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

They seem to have become shy about publishing formal errata since 2023, certainly. Shy about making undocumented changes to D&D Beyond content, not so much. I guess that isn't really errata though, since errata is specifically a documented list of corrections.

D&D General Hold Back the Dead - Free Digital D&D Adventure Coming 4th Feb

We can rule out the latter possibility, because we know there isn't going to be a campaign book in 2025. This is possible. However, the only time previously that D&D Beyond has released part of an upcoming book as a preview was Descent into the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth and that was clearly...

Why Dungeons & Dragons Isn't Putting Out a Campaign Book in 2025

The UK D&D Adventurer magazine is £8.99 per issue, or about $11.20. It is certainly nothing like either Dragon or Dungeon in terms of content but presumably has a profitable economic model and doesn't contain adverts.
