Spotlight Interview: John Rogers on the Manual of the Planes

Nope. I loved that adventure, but there's not really a parallel. Ravenloft is so specific, too, I'm not sure what you can bring out and have fit in other milieus.

Spotlight Interview: John Rogers on the Manual of the Planes

Tricksters and Pranskters? Hmm, no, not so much. Think "alien", if you can strip the sci fi baggage away. I'm not sure if it's still in there, but I made a point of noting Queen Tiandra's sense of humor: "There are some jokes that are only funny to a sense of humor that's developed over four...

Spotlight Interview: John Rogers on the Manual of the Planes

Wow, nice feedback. And you'll note, on the day when we get the ratings for my new TV show, I'm hanging out in the EN World forums. My geek cred will not be doubted. If you have any process questions or non-spoiler-y stuff, feel free to ask, I'll see what I can say. Oh, and be assured -- the...

Need help- Modern-like D20 system to handle my needs

Although I am a huge Modern20 fan, its reliance on HP and the superior third party support for True20 throws my recommendaiton in its camp. That said, buy the Modern20 pdfs. His innovaitons on handling resources, reputation, etc, are all fantastic.

    D&D 4E 4E without Magic Items

Right, I'm hacking away at trying to come up with a balance system based on the DMG, the Magic Item table in the PHB, and some developer notes. I know switching out magic items and just substituting in level-based bonuses CAN be done, I'm jut stumbling a bit on the math. Has somebody already...

    The Early Verdict (kinda long)

I'm not completely buying that math thread -- and regardless, that argument leaves out a hell of a lot of mitigating factors and bonuses. But that aside -- how more restricting? "Okay guys, we've got a problem, everybody toss in whatever they think they can do!"

How do I describe "being marked" to players?

In GMing I've used: "That Hobgoblin is raining (blows/arrows) down on you. Unless you deal with him, he's just going to tear you up while you fight the other monsters." Make it about the monster'sintent or ferocity -- that's what's causing the deleterious modifier. For those who feel this...

    Minion Criticals

I'd remind you, also, that for area attacks you now make attack rolls against each creature in the area. As the Defenses are balanced for party level, I assure you (base don play experience) that some of the minions are gonna come limping out of that Scorching Burst and want some payback.

    Sell me on True20!

No. The explanation of the damage mechanic is better in the revised, but it's addressed so many times in the True20 forums, I'd take a pass if you have the originals. Although I did pick it up in pdf, for convenicen's sake.

Jason Bulmahn Speaks about DDXP(His take on the system)

Having run the system, that's pretty much it. The class bonuses are in the initial chance to affect you, which meshes with the new power design. After that, individual racial "save" (and I put that in quotes because it is definitely NOT the save of your youth) bonuses hve pretty decent effec...

    Mutants and Masterminds, edition differences

I'd like to also reccomend using 2E for all-purpose. The powers scale better than in 1E. Also, they've got AGENTS OF FREEDOM sourcebook for spy games, and mecha and fantasy warriors coming up.

    D&D 4E Mouseferatu weighs in on 4e

Correct, I meant in the stat block. And you've got to know how skills work, and also just the looser design philosophy that ... arrrrg NDA.

    D&D 4E Mouseferatu weighs in on 4e

I didn't really have an answer until I skimmed this thread. Biggest misconception -- power being taken away from the DM as world-builder, DM being assigned as "pre-fab adventure runner". It seems some people won't be happy unless the system is utterly setting neutral, and others won't be...

    D&D 4E Mouseferatu weighs in on 4e

I'm not going to give out any comparative details. i thought all the classes my group played not only played well, but had extraordinarily distinctive play styles. I will say that while the Paladin was super shiny, the Fighter for me had the lock on fun and useful "techniques" (I refuse to...

    D&D 4E Mouseferatu weighs in on 4e

Hey, how ticked-off do you think my LA players were? My regular group for five years isn't my playtest group for 4E because two months earlier I moved to Canada? So, so angry. And that's an angry Johanna. Which any readers fo the story hour know we Do Not Want.

    D&D 4E Mouseferatu weighs in on 4e

Well, this quote got me to chime in here, as I just got my go ahead to talk a little about playtesting. And since there's no way I can profit from my blurbage, there should be no lingering doubts about whether it's because I'm looking for a future gig. Although anyone who even suspects that...

    Opinions on True20

Not only do I love the system, but I have to second the love of the message board. whatever, WHATEVER you're trying to house rule, or figure out some mini-system for, or even adapt from some other media source, you'll find somebody who's either tried it, has something close, or will help you...

4th ed, the Good & the Bad?

I have to say, Wulf is one of the maybe one and a half indie designers who, when he says "trust me it's fine" when it comes to the math ... you trust him and it's fine. On the rogue "sneak attack" line, I fall into the "poorly named sacred cow" camp. Call sneak attack something else, to drag...
