    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Why? Because D&D should be inclusive and cater to most everybody. As for the rest, why do you need the system to do that for you? If it's a table issue as you say, why isn't just dealing with it at the table, as opposed to the system, enough?

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

This sort of attitude baffles and saddens me to no end.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Barbarian seems to get it for free, it's true. Barbarian doesn't get any free control though, and has to spend feats or levels in other classes. Focusing on defense and control will sacrifice a Barbarian's offense. Other classes can get it for the cost of three Barbarian levels, which is a cost...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

There's a lot to reply to, so bear with me. This may take several posts. I don't seek to dominate the game through character building. I seek to kick ass, and powergaming is the means to that end. Dominating the table isn't necessary for that, though at times it has happened. It happens less...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I am playing 4E still. This thread is about how I'm dealing with joining an Encounters game.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

As a powergamer, my goal isn't just to win, it's to kick ass. A lot of smart and/or winning play doesn't involve kicking ass, but as I said my goal in play is to kick ass and I build my characters to win by kicking ass, not by being smart.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Casters still have an edge at higher levels in 5E, but not as bad as in previous editions. Claiming that Pathfinder or 3E is better in this regard is frankly ridiculous.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I played a few games last year at 5th level, with a plate wearing Cleric with 20 AC who cast Shield of Faith on himself to buff that to 22. Surrounded by three enemies, he didn't last long. With the exception of a raging Barbarian with high HP taking half damage from weapons(or everything), it's...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

The 4E defender role is a mix of defense and control. In 5E, both of those are things you need to spend resources on. A 4E defender got both of those for free at level 1.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I'll try answering all your questions in turn. What I'm talking about is the balance between the importance of dice rolls compared to the importance of tactics(choices in play) or building an effective character. Compared to all previous editions, 5E places more importance on the randomness of...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Standing around not attacking every turn isn't exactly my idea of awesome, effective or not.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I just spent the past 5 days pouring over books and forums learning how to min/max every 5e class and building 10 maximized level 1 death machines with levels 2-10 mapped out for Curse of Strahd. I made 10 because I didn't know what other people would run, except for one person I know is playing...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

That isn't quite what I meant. What I was talking about is that most of the battles I've seen in 5E, in play or as a spectator have been either groups of weak enemies, or one strong enemy and 0-3 weak ones. Weak enemies a glass cannon can generally solo, as you hit hard enough to kill it before...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Advantage/disadvantage being in the hands of the DM means it may as well not exist to somebody like me. If I don't have control over it, it isn't useful to me. The 5E games I've played and watched haven't seen much adv/dis, and I've never seen inspiration used. As for the player choices that...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

    1. Between the unreliability and how most things die in 2-3 hits or 2-3 rounds of the party ganging up on a single enemy, it rarely feels like any single action matters. 2. Most of the test characters I've built are 15-18AC, wherever they end up with zero investment in defense(just what class...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

This isn't my preferred edition by a long shot. I'd much rather play 4E, 1E/2E, or 3.5E(more or less in that order) than 5E, but due to life circumstances that have nothing to do with D&D, I find myself now starting Curse of Strahd. I played a few sessions of 5E about a year ago, and I've been...

D&D 5E I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

Again, I'll say that arguing over early sales of 5E is missing the point. The point is whether 5E will coalesce the community into a single entity or whether it will simply further fragment it. The Amazon Bestseller list isn't going to tell us that. Seeing Pathfinder sales crater as people...

D&D 5E I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

If a greater percentage of customers buy the PHB from amazon than they did with 4E, it could skew the numbers. I think this argument is academic. I consider myself one of the biggest 5E doomsayers and I always thought the 5E PHB would sell great upon release. If/when Paizo starts outselling...

D&D 5E What direction do you want to see D&D 5e go?

I'd like to see 5E release extensive supplemental material to the point where you can run a game similar to 13th age, high powered 3.x, or 4E.
