D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

5-15 minutes is too short for anything interesting to happen. An exciting encounter should be able to develop into back and forth, ebb and flow action. If a fight is bang bang over its just dull. My ideal would be in the 25-30 minute range.

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

I really don't think that the level of open-mindedness you describe and seem to be pressuring us to replicate is warranted or necessary. I look at Next and to me so far it sucks. No need to sugar coat it. In my opinion, being overly optimistic damages the end product more than being critical.

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

On top of that, trying to achieve 4E style play without metagame mechanics would lead to an unwieldy clunky mess in my opinion. Just look at how many hoops they feel they need to jump through over Warlord healing.

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

The issue would be not with the Hit point system itself, but how changing the hit point system would have a negative or unbalancing effect on other parts of the system and 5E offering little to no solutions for the consequences or ramifications of changing how healing works

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

This is indicative of another issue: people don't want just one thing. In addition to a cinematic action focus for HP and resource management, as a 4E fan I'm looking for a strong, coherent system. Leaving things I care about to AD&D-style ambiguity is a non-solution to me.

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

I don't think WotC owes me anything as a 4E fan, but if the 'modular D&D for everybody' they keep advertising Next to be isn't going to include 4E, they should stop being evasive about it and fess up.

Not being addressed doesn't indicate neglect. The 14 month timespan does.

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

14 straight months of neglect is proof enough. Tweets aren't proving a point, they reinforce a point.

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

I think both Next itself and its defenders just don't get the significance of how the game does this. It really informs everything the game does, and you can't just arbitrarily change it and expect the rest of the game to keep on working as it did before.

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

From the start I've believed that they are building Next around a flawed premise, that being that there is a single core D&D experience we can all agree on and that a 5E built on that single foundation can please the entire D&D community. It's a nice thought, but the reality is that it just...

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

You repeatedly focused on the word cinematic while ignoring the rest of what I said and the context in which I was using the term. You responded to me with mere semantics as opposed to making any substantive contribution.

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

This would be a far more interesting and productive discussion if your go back and actually read and respond to what I've said as opposed to getting hung up on the word cinematic.

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

It would be nice if people would address the sort of game I and others are trying to describe as an ideal and what we are describing as wanting out of 5E instead of arguing over the meaning of the word "cinematic". If people would care to get past the semantics, I'd love for people to go back...

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

I've said before that its the luck points and bennies that enable cinematic action when it comes to healing, not the slow regen, and its the lack of bennies that makes 5E fall short in this regard. It worked in 4E because Healing Surges functioned as bennies, something that 5E Hit Dice or slow...

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

The effect could be interpreted as cinematic, but the act itself of resting for the night( or for a few hours) is not cinematic. You aren't getting that cinematic action is being defined in terms of adventure pacing and game play, not in terms of the campaign world. Or to put it more simply...

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

What you say is a superficial take on things and misses the point. The point of cinematic action is that a lot of action(HP damage in this case) happens with few long term consequences and no interruption to the adventure. Having to rest for hours by itself breaks that. 'Not gritty' isnt the...

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

The mid-fight turnaround I'd actually file under tactical depth. Cinematic Action is more about the pacing of the adventure as a whole.

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

You make my argument for me. 1hp/hr by itself doesn't deliver cinematic healing, by your own words. By your own words, and I agree with you on this, it's the bennies that deliver cinematic healing. In 4E those bennies were healing surges and powers that let you spend them in combat. In the...

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

'Not gritty' is a low bar to set for cinematic. 1hp/hr is more of a wishy washy nothing than either cinematic or gritty as it fails both.

D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

It's really not. Cinematic is dusting yourself off and progressing to the next scene as if getting hurt didnt just happen. Sitting around for hours to heal is not cinematic at all. I don't see much modernity at all. I see a rehash of old D&D traditions with a coat of paint on top. Seriously...
