D&D 5E Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

5E has done more or less nothing to support 4E style play in any way that actually matters. When I look at what 4E is when played at the table, I see: 1. Cinematic Action--the pacing of HP/healing and resource management modules what you see in action cinema. 2. Cool Powers--In 4E you can do...

D&D 5E How well can you make your favourite character?

No, I mean create a character with Defender mechanics without having to spend all my Maneuvers and/or feats for the privilege.

D&D 5E How well can you make your favourite character?

Well, my favorite character is a strong 4E Defender with a lot depth. 5E only allows me to play a second rate(compared to 4E) Defender with zero depth. The answer is not at all.

Any word on how 5E is supposed to deliver 4E style play?

Were people's expectations of "Modularity" set a little too high?

They were able to be fixed by minor tweaks as opposing to having to fundamentally overhaul the entire system.

Were people's expectations of "Modularity" set a little too high?

The difference lies between a few minor tweaks and beyond fixing so don't bother. Also, it wasn't so much the necessity of errata as much as they actually cared to provide it. There was far more wrong with 3E/3.5E, they just never bothered to fix it.

Were people's expectations of "Modularity" set a little too high?

Doing 4E would IMO require: A better mechanical/mathematical foundation than what we've seen Gameplay not based on resource attrition over an adventuring day A greater focus on player empowerment and a move away from Mother May I A change in the aesthetics of PC abilities, something more...

Were people's expectations of "Modularity" set a little too high?

More than that, if I want chocolate, the quality of the vanilla is irrelevant and focusing on making the best vanilla possible is counterproductive. It's not about the core being good or bad, it's about the core being wrong.

Were people's expectations of "Modularity" set a little too high?

They promised 5E would deliver for every style of D&D through modularity. If the core is fixed, not subject to change by modularity, and that core prevents a style from being catered to, the promise fails. It's not a question of the car working or not, it's a question of the car sucking and...

    D&D 4E What 5E needs to learn from 4E

With that reasoning, I'd prefer that Mother May I style play, Vancian magic, and the game being balanced around resource attrition be optional.

Were people's expectations of "Modularity" set a little too high?

Their statements and what little they have shown of modularity had indicated a strong, unchanging core and modules that would be additive only, nothing that changes the core. For those unhappy with that core or who find the current core to be in direct conflict with how they play D&D, not being...

Were people's expectations of "Modularity" set a little too high?

While people's expectations of modularity may or may not be too high, modularity has fallen fall short of the promises they made for it in the early days just after the announcement of 5E. They promised that 5E modularity would allow you to run any playstyle of D&D, and 5E hasn't come close to...

    D&D 5E You can't necessarily go back

Earlier editions of D&D were to a large degree vague, shapeless and formless masses open to interpretation. This came about by happenstance, and it seems like WotC is trying to deliberately recreate that happenstance. I don't think they can, pandora's box has been opened and I don't think it can...

D&D 5E So did they just drop modularity ? This is what has me worried.

The issue is that Vancian magic is a sore spot for a lot of people. We don't necessarily want alternatives so much as the ability to run a complete game of D&D while removing it entirely. To put it more specifically, I want to be able to play any character concept I can think of without having...

    D&D 4E What's in 5e for 4e fans?

Almost nothing. There is an interesting thread going on over at WotC where 4E fans are being asked about what they like about 4E: Whoops! Browser Settings Incompatible.! It's downright depressing how little of what is being discussed in that thread is present in 5E at the moment.

    Warlock and Sorcerer

If in order to never touch Vancian magic in 5E I have to never play the Wizard archetype and in order to run a Vancian-free 5E game I have to ban the Wizard class, I consider the system somewhat broken. I expect better from the word modularity. Pre-emotive response: refluffing Warlock/Sorcerer...

    Non Advantage/Disadvantage bonus and penalties

Reading through the playtest documents, I'm finding little +/- 1s and 2s tucked here and there, like mob rule for Kobolds and Rats in the Bestiary, or -1 to attack when prone. It kind of defeats the purpose of advantage/disadvantage simplifying everything to mix the static modifiers back in, and...

    D&D 5E [D&D Next] Second Packet - initial impressions

It's a practical and principle thing. Practical in that years of experience have made me dislike the actual results of rolling stats, and principle in being opposed to randomly determining something that will define the effectiveness of your character over the length of the campaign. The...

    D&D 5E [D&D Next] Second Packet - initial impressions

If its not a big deal as you say, why not just give in and list rolling dice as the second or third option and appease all the people that hate it.
