    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

In terms of the optimization community for 5E, Fireball is considered very very good when you first get it, but not quite unbalanced. From there, it doesn't exactly scale well and past level 10 or so it's situational at best, good against mobs of weak enemies only and not competing with save or...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

That is shifting the goalposts. You are talking about balance being a bad thing, not about story.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

D&D PCs are exceptional compared to the populace at large. They have abilities not possessed by average civilians that allow them to overcome and survive the adversity thrown against D&D PCs.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Most of the time you would be just talking about basic tactics. If the character is a tank, you'd attack the enemy center. If you're playing a more glass cannon sort of melee, you'd try to match up 1 on 1 against somebody on the flank. If you're ranged, you target whoever looks the most...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Roleplaying. You put yourself in the character shoes, and you act as that character would act based on who they are and what that character sees. I would think this would be obvious.

The issue is that the passages in question weren't talking about people who fit the description of D&D PCs.

Not metagame means you don't use knowledge/info the character doesn't have.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I'm not averse to further discussion, exposition, or debate. I'm not really looking for solutions so much, and I'm not likely to change my mind(playing at the table has been reinforcing my opinions). 1. The lack of PC customization is probably my biggest issue, because more than anything it...

    5. Do not metagame when using a DMPC

4th to 5th Edition Converters - What has been your experience?

I only recently picked up 5E. I wrote it off during the playtest as something I wasn't interested in, and only just now joined an AL game for geographic reasons(I was was going to be there either way and not playing was the worse option). It was my least favorite D&D before, and 3 sessions in...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I find a decent portion of the game to be the PCs being social with each other in game, and a DMPC gives me a seat at that table. They're also useful in moderation in getting the game unstuck. If you are helpful, don't hog the spotlight, and have an interesting personality players don't have too...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

It kind of depends on what you enjoy playing. I enjoy playing the brooding antihero, and I found that this sort of character makes for a very unintrusive DMPC. You aren't a big part of decision making because you don't care, and you aren't really social with strangers but can still be someone...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I more or less agree with you in terms of being robust, but it's not the only consideration. When I say base I mean the core of a game in a general sense where if you're customizing its what you build your game on top of and don't really change. It kind of goes back to my main complaints with...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

I'm not particularly against the DMPC. I use one more often than not, and during 4E I almost always used one if the party had less than six players. 4E really lent itself to running one more than other editions, minimizing most of the usual problems though slowing combat down a bit. I've found...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Meh, I'd rather just play something where my enjoyment doesn't depend so much on the DM. There's a lot more to it than that. I hadn't thought of that. With so many judgement calls in 5E compared to other games it's a particularly bad fit, as a DM run character would have a big advantage there.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

It's as controversial as anything else I've said in this thread, but there is a thing called the DMPC for running and playing at the same time. There are ways to do it less wrong.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

A lot of 'support' people demanded during the playtest was nothing more than the exclusion of support for other people or things said people didn't want.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

That's the real rub. If you intend on being a hero who faces real risk, you really aren't going to survive a D&D campaign for very long. The math is stacked against you. That it was. Intended or no, it's really not something that can be fixed. As for the video game thing, I know it's a dog...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

It also has little to do with being a murderhobo hiding behind waves of hirelings, being paranoid to the point to tapping every floor tile with a ten foot pole. Neither does it have anything to do with being a corpse cold on the floor because you suck at fighting monsters Neither does it have...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Most of the drama in the edition wars was over tradition, change and identity, as opposed to play style. I can play D&D my way regardless of edition too, even 5E, but it's easier in some places than in others. My major beefs with 5E are lack of character customization compared to other...
