    Multi-Edition D&D

If you were to try to support 1E, 2E, 3E, and 4E with one adventure, it would be a lot of work. If you were to create two or three new editions of the game, designed to be somewhat compatible (perhaps they would all use the same monsters, but some versions would ignore certain stats), yet...

    Multi-Edition D&D

I was twelve when I started playing and wasn't confused. D&D and AD&D had different names. I figured, and rightly so, that D&D was an easier version of the same game, and it didn't bother me that the rules were different. I just figured BECMI was targeted toward beginners. I rather liked...

    Multi-Edition D&D

Yes, they sure did. Just about any type of campaign setting you could think of was thrown out there. And it wasn't a good move, because while there is more than one "best" setting, there aren't 50. They don't have that cash. They have to rely on their experience and low cost research. This...

    Multi-Edition D&D

In some ways, D&D didn't die at all. Plenty of people still play earlier editions. WotC just isn't getting any income from it. My thinking is that with digital publishing, it could be economically viable to support multiple editions. Perhaps not only viable, but necessary for survival.

    Multi-Edition D&D

Sure, but BECMI was supported for a long time before that retirement. There were lots of adventures and supplements. It wasn't a failure, but just like all products, it ran its course. Those are my thoughts too. You may be right. All the settings, splatbooks, adventures and accessories...

    Multi-Edition D&D

All the discussion about 5E and Mike Mearl's articles, and speculation about WotC downsizing and business strategy, got me thinking about a video I watched the other day with an author talking about Howard Moskowitz's detailed study on spaghetti sauces It's a long rambling video, so to...

    Challenges for a Druid Farmer

Cool, sounds like a neat campaign. I really like it when PC's take the initiative and help create the story and influence the world, rather than just sit in a tavern and wait for a hooded stranger to walk in and give them a quest.

    Challenges for a Druid Farmer

    - A rival farmer dams off his source of irrigation and makes other problems. Rancher wars. - Any sort of burrowing monster - Radical druids who believe agriculture is too unnatural attack the farm or otherwise cause problems. (maybe they're on the paleo diet or something ;) ) - Long winter...

How do you get your players to creatively describe their combat actions?

I just lead by example. Before you can expect the players to give a good description, the DM needs to give a good description. If I say "The orc hits you for 12 points of damage," how do you think the players will describe their actions? However if I say "The orc hacks at you in its...

Mearls: Playing with the core (of D&D)

From the end of the article: Essentials 2.0 ? lol, I honestly don't know what direction he's going with this.

    D&D-ism you would sacrifice?

Chaotic and Lawful alignments. I think a tangible Good and Evil serve many purposes, and that Unaligned is a great option, but Chaotic and Lawful alignments are an unnecessary complication and best replaced with personality traits.

    5E on the horizon?

Heya back at ya. :) I think you hit the nail on the head there. 4E turned out not to be the game for me either, at least at first, and apparently we are in good company since the fan base is so split. Unfortunately my group couldn't agree on a schedule to play anyway, so we haven't played any...

    5E on the horizon?

I have met many game designers at WoTC many times, and I have gamed with them, and I assure that's not the case. They do care. Whether you think they did a good job with D&D or not is subjective and I won't get into edition wars. I personally think they did great with 3rd and stumbled...

    5E on the horizon?

I think my prediction is that WotC's support of the D&D brand is heading for a more passive state, not toward a new edition. Instead of creating a new edition, they will: - continue to publish board and card games, and alternate settings like Gamma World to test the waters on what works for...

AMpersand #400 Bill S leaving WotC (and others?)

Bill is one of my favorite game designers of all time. Torg, Alternity, and D&D 3rd and 4th editions are some of my favorite games. I hope for the very best for all the folks leaving WotC, and for the folks they leave behind.

A Concern About Wizard's Race Designs of Late

I immediately thought of Kaz when I saw that minotaurs were going to be a player race in PHB3. I've always liked the idea of an entire minotaur civilization in a huge labyrinth of a city. The premise of the bestial minotaurs being the ones who serve Baphomet fits well, allowing me to keep them...

A Concern About Wizard's Race Designs of Late

I have always been in favor of a human centric campaign because it makes the non-humans seem more special, and it's easier for me at least to relate to the characters and their wonder at seeing strange things. However, if everyone wanted to play a non-human, and I ended up with a weird...

    Higher than level 30?

Lots of people feel this way and it makes me wonder if the "sweet spot" of 3E is something that was more of a player induced phenomena rather than a design flaw. Not criticizing your opinion or 3e...just food for thought.

I have a bunch of kenku minis I can't wait to use. They're just so creepy-cool.

    Throngs

Interesting stuff, makes me want to check out Open Grave. Am I the only one who saw this thread and read it as monster thongs? I suggest misspelling the title on purpose so more people check it out. Looks useful. :)
