Ki versus Psionic: Power Sources Do Battle (in a semantic sort of way)

At first I was annoyed that Ki wouldn't be a power source...for about 3 seconds. It is better that monks are psionic. Ki in D&D 3rd edition was defined as deriving power from within, and I like that definition. It is completely compatible with the notion of psionics, so much so that it is...

So, what happened to the Design writeup on Expertise?

Yeah, I'd say you are a little bitter. I don't have a problem with it taking a few weeks or even months. I suspect they did make a mistake and are choosing their words carefully by devoting a column to it in order not to make another mistake. That's a good thing.

How does one play a beastmaster Ranger?

The biggest advantage of my wife's beastmaster ranger's cat is that she can more easily designate her hunter's quarry. from the compendium: She hangs back and uses predatory strike or fires arrows until she sees an opening to help the rogue flank, or until the cat is bloodied, and then goes...

D&D 4E Running player commentary on PCat's 4E Campaign - Heroic tier (finished)

#1 I hadn't thought about...you're right, it's easy to have them add another feat, and the math is done for them. #2 is the main reason I'm going to do it....I hate it when dailies miss. Would have been nice if they were all reliable, but that's a nice niche for the fighter to have.

New player asking for some advice/help, please. 3e vs 4e. Which one is for me?

Whatever system you go with, I'm sure you'll have fun. Every version of D&D is a blast, especially when played with good friends. This is a fairly good assessment, but I'll caution that the only reason 3e has more flexibility with PCs is its age. 4e will have hybrid classes next year, and...

D&D 4E Running player commentary on PCat's 4E Campaign - Heroic tier (finished)

Love the card idea. I really need to do that, if nothing else so that my wife doesn't feel that she has to use "Twin Strike" every round. I'm on the fence on the Expertise debacle, not sure I want to give it for free, though I see the logic. I'm trying very hard not to implement any house...

D&D 4E Running player commentary on PCat's 4E Campaign - Heroic tier (finished)

Wow, not what I expected for your skill challenges, but it makes sense. I've been going in the opposite direction, trying to disguise skill challenge's, not letting them know how many successes and failures they need or have, or even that they are in a skill challenge. So far it's been...

"Level Up" issue 1 from Goodman

Joseph Goodman is a very smart guy, I'm sure he's got a good business plan. The rest of the industry should consider his strategy; I'd go to my FLGS, but they are no longer in business. Rewarding customers for going to their FLGS seems wise to me.

So which non- D&D based games have you played?

DM'd: Torg (my all time favorite RPG) Star Frontiers Top Secret Bug Hunters Paranoia Toon Tunnels and Trolls Call of Cthulu Vampire Indiana Jones Marvel Super Heroes I've only had the opportunity to play D&D 3rd edition and earlier.

    D&D is a Horror Game

OP has a point. A point of light that is...points of light seems to lean in the direction of horror. You're safe in the village and maybe as far as the creek, but go out too deeply in the woods and you're an adventurer. So maybe it isn't horror for the PCs, but the NPCs are probably all a...

    Multiclass and power swap feats

I don't feel the RAW handles new classes well. It should be easy and within the rules to change that rogue into the bard you always wanted to play, or that multiclass and power swap feat chain into the new class that you would have chosen if it were available at the time. They should have put...

    Stuff I'd like to write

#2 is brilliant. I greatly enjoyed Birthright, and the idea of such a power source is intriguing, particularly as a limited power source that doesn't have a set of classes. I can imagine paragon paths like the Herald or the Power Behind the Throne. Good stuff. The rest I'm not so...

    D&D 4E 4E with less powers

It sounds like three things are bugging them, and because there are multiple concerns for them, it feels like a big deal to them, even if all three problems are small by themselves. I'm guessing they feel: 1. They dislike that there is not a simple class to play in 4e. In earlier editions...

    More Orcs!

I think the way it's supposed to work is that the orc spends a standard action to get the bonus on subsequent attacks, which persists as long as he's bloodied. I envision the orc screaming in rage at the heavens instead of attacking. Probably will freak out the players the first time you use it.

    Parrying Dagger Question

I agree. Do him a favor and rule that shields are not weapons and encourage him to use something that does more damage, perhaps a weapon wielded by his deity. If he wants more AC, then make up a Shield Mastery feat that gives him an additional +1 AC with the heavy shield. Not overpowered by...

    Dungeon tiles. yay or nay?

(waves at Kevin) It's a delight to be here. I find myself lurking less and posting more now that my oldest son is playing 4e. (back to the thread) The one problem I have with Dungeon Tiles is that I'm addicted to buying them as they are reasonably priced, so I have so many that it's...

    D&D 4E Help a 4e N00B

The coolest thing for me on the player side is how the classes work well together. In 4e, all the classes are assigned "roles" that define how they are supposed to work together in combat. Defenders "tank" the bad guys...they absorb damage and protect other members of the party...leaders heal...

    Dungeon tiles. yay or nay?

The dungeon tiles can speed up play quite a bit, particularly if you don't have time to map out an area in advance. But I like battlemats with wet erase markers for large areas or for areas that need a more custom design.

    So, about Expertise...

It seems to me that the feat could just have been intended to be for people who hate to miss with their dailies. No player likes to miss with an important daily power, but some really really hate it...it messes up their fun. If that's so, maybe a good errata or house rule would be to allow the...

    4e for younger gamers

I just did, and I'm glad. I was never a fan of the old e-tools, and didn't think I'd care for the new program, given WotC's track record with electronic products in general. But this thing is great. Try the free demo, like I did, and I think you'll want to subscribe for a month to get the...
