    4e for younger gamers

I run a game for my wife and my 11 year old son, and he has a lot of fun. Not sure I'd want him at the table in my regular campaign with friends my age, but that's more because I'm worried about my friends' immaturity. :) One tip, let your son create some power cards using index cards when...

    Are Milestones fun?

I just house rule that every encounter is a milestone. Simplifies it for me and increases the number of action points. I find that making every encounter a milestone actually rewards them more for continued play. Your action points reset to 1 at the end of an extended rest, and the players...

PHB2 Races = Mos Eisley Cantina

The book is about adding new options, so I don't have any objections about art that features the new races, or their inclusion in the book for that matter. However, personally, I don't like the "zoo crew" aspect that some campaigns take on. I like campaigns that have at least one or two humans...

Goblin Hexer: example of bad design

This. It begs the question: "Is this guy going to live long enough to use those abilities, or is it just excessive write up?"

Dragon Roots Magazine DIDN'T sell the 4e Killed Gary shirts

I saw them, it was about four guys, all together. Didn't see any for sale anywhere at the Con. Most tasteless, ignorant thing I've ever seen in gaming.

    A little PHB 2 info

I don't know if the cover is public yet, but we saw it on a slide. Had a goliath looking guy with a huge axe and a female elf with two ghostly panthers she seemed to be summoning/controlling. Barbarian and shaman perhaps.

    A little PHB 2 info

Bards will be leaders...Rob Heinsoo divulged this during the 4e Q&A...not too suprising. Additionally, they let us know that two of the classes will be controllers in PHB2. Not a lot of info getting out in those seminars, they were pretty tight-lipped. :)

What are the must have new products?

I'm here at GenCon for the first time in 5 years, and I brought my two sons this time (7 and 10). What overlooked product should I make sure I pick up before I leave?

    Guenhwyvar as an artifact

I run a 4e campaign for my wife and son, and one of the suggestions I received on these boards for making a TPK less likely was to let them have pets. I asked her what type of pet she prefers, and she mentioned cats. Since her character is a ranger, my thoughts went to Drizzt and Guenhwyvar...

D&D 4E Seeking opinion of role of 4e monk

I think we agree on these points much more I first thought. I do not think roles should be used as straightjackets, but I do see the value of them both for players and class designers.

D&D 4E Seeking opinion of role of 4e monk

The paladin and fighter seem different enough from each other, as are the ranger and rogue. I don't think it takes too much imagination to create new powers that feel different yet have the same goal. Well, that's not a hybrid class, and it demonstrates that you don't need a hybrid class to...

D&D 4E Seeking opinion of role of 4e monk

I dislike the idea of hybrids, and hope that the classes in the PHBII aren't trying to fill more than one role. IMO, if you have more than one role, you're trying to cram too much into one class. The whole idea of roles in 4e is to make certain classes aren't too good at everything or no good...

D&D 4E Seeking opinion of role of 4e monk

Striker. But honestly, if I were to design a 4e monk, I wouldn't limit myself to one class. A defender and controller, like the above posts suggest, would be fun too, all using the ki power source. The interesting part of that is "how does having Ki as your power source cause these monk...

16 years, 400+ sessions, and the campaign is done!

I had the pleasure of playing in one of PCat's sessions years ago while on a business trip to Boston. What a great bunch of folks! Thanks again for having me over, Kevin and congratulations, it must be truly bittersweet to end such a wonderful campaign.

    Dungeon Tiles - Photos

I love Dungeon Tiles. It's the best value product from WotC. I use them sometimes with published adventures...it doesn't usually matter much if the room in a dungeon is off by 10ft here or there, or if a strangely shaped room become a rectangle, I modify the description in the adventure to fit...

4e with 1 player- and a 10 yr old at that

The elite template is also a good idea. I've run a bunch of sessions, and they've just hit 3rd level, and even with the extra action points and second wind as a minor action it's still a little deadlier than I'd like since there are only 2 of them, so these ideas might be the edge that my two...

Great idea, I'm yoinking it. And I think I'm going to let him use his healing surges to heal his pet too.

4e with 1 player- and a 10 yr old at that

I have a campaign I run for my wife and my 10 year old son. Ashton had never played D&D before, but loves it. Here are some tips and things to watch out for: You can encourage him to play a paladin or fighter, but when it comes down to it let him play whatever class he likes, the wizard is no...

Minions with 1hp - Can anyone justify this?

Different issue, but I will say that I don't see anything sad. I don't see 4e's focus on combat as inhibiting roleplaying because I don't need rules to roleplay. I do need combat rules to make combat go quick and smooth so that we can roleplay more, so in fact I believe 4e encourages...

Minions with 1hp - Can anyone justify this?

Looking at the books, I don't see it. Minions are mentioned in the DMG and MM, and nothing mentions that they are statted from the Player Character's point of view. However, nothing talks about minions outside of the context of a fight with player characters either. That's because 4e only...
