Dire Spirits is an introductory adventure in the African-themed Nyambe campaign setting, by Atlas Games. It is a 48-page stapled softcover booklet priced at $12.95. It utilizes 3.0 rules and conventions. Note: this is a playtest review. Spoilers follow. The adventure is set in the village...

    Burok Torn: City Under Siege

I didn't think I was going to give it a 2, either, since I really did enjoy the first chapter, and I am actually very curious about the Scarred Lands now. But as I went on, I found the book more and more unimpressive. If average-quality books are supposed to get a 3, then unfortunately I have...

    Burok Torn: City Under Siege

Burok Torn: City Under Siege is a city supplement for the Scarred Lands campaign setting, by Sword & Sorcery Studios. It is a 112 page, softcover book, retailing at $17.95. I got my copy from a bargain bin at about $5. The book uses 3.0 rules and conventions. Burok Torn has seven chapters...

    "Planar Handbook" - completlely useless?

I just thought I'd chime in in support of Mystery Man here. I have a pretty small d20 shelf (maybe 12-15 books, including the core books), and I already feel like I have enough prestige classes, feats, spells, etc. for a lifetime of gaming. Then I walk into my FLGS, and I see row after row of...

    D&D 3E/3.5 3.5E Spot Distance

I'd like to resurrect this old thread because I'm still a bit confused about Spot in 3.5E. I see that the terrain entries in the DMG all list maximum spotting distances, and I also see that the PH specifies a -1 penalty to Spot for each 10' of distance. What I don't see stated explicitly is...

What d20 Purchases to you Regret?

For me, the biggest regret would be AEG's Toolbox. It's been generally well-reviewed, and got a special mention from Monte Cook, but I found it to be very, very badly edited (some of the worst stat blocks I've ever seen) and padded with a lot of utterly useless encounter tables.

    Toolbox

    Thanks, I will.

    Toolbox

I recently purchased AEG's Toolbox on the recommendation of Monte Cook, and I wanted to take the opportunity to address some issues that weren't covered in previous reviews. Toolbox is a GM's aid. It is a 192-page, softcover book containing hundreds of tables of setting details, ideas, and...

Vote for your favorite original D&D monster!

I went with the rust monster, but I'd like to have seen ear seekers, thought eaters, and intellect devourers make an appearance.

    D&D 3E/3.5 3.5 PHB Errata are up...

Well, they cleverly decided that certain rulebooks had precedence over others on certain subjects, and that text had precedence over tables, so that allowed them to dispense with a huge number of errors. The problem with this approach is that it puts the onus for finding the errors on the...

    D&D 3E/3.5 3.5 PHB Errata are up...

Interesting that they only fixed half of Spell Turning's problems. They changed the inflict critical wounds example to magic missile, because ICW is a touch spell, but then they left the fear example intact, even though it's an area spell. The new format is very nice, though.

[OT] What is Minneapolis/St. Paul like?

The food doesn't really suck. I'm originally from NYC, living out here for four years, and there are plenty of good restaurants. You'll pay a premium for good seafood (coming from KC, you're probably in the same boat), and you may need to request a little extra spice in your food now and...

    D&D 3E/3.5 3.5 Errata Reporting

Here's another: DMG, p. 38, bottom right hand corner, in the table showing the CR of creatures with class levels. The table and footnotes indicate that ogres are CR 2, and they're now CR 3.

    D&D 3E/3.5 3.5 Errata Reporting

Here's a couple more: DMG p. 48, under Multiple Monsters and Encounter Levels: "The Monster Manual entry on ogres shows that they are CR 2." That was 3.0; now they're CR 3. DMG p. 208, on Epic Druids: "The druid may have a maximum number of animal companions equal to twice her class level, as...

Ex-bards and +1 caster level PrCs

That was my inclination, too. I'm just curious to see if anyone has a strong dissenting opinion, or can cite a rule to the contrary.

Ex-bards and +1 caster level PrCs

According to the PH, bards who change to a lawful alignment become ex-bards, and may no longer gain levels as bards. OK, simple enough. However, suppose an ex-bard (who remains lawful) takes a prestige class that grants her +1 caster level in her existing spellcaster class. Does she get the...

    Nyambe PrC balance?

Thanks for the replies. I haven't had a chance yet to actually play in Nyambe, so I wasn't sure how well any of the classes worked. I agree that the unique conditions in Nyambe could mitigate a lot of the potential problems. I'll have to see for myself, but I think I may end up following DM...

    Nyambe PrC balance?

Has anyone here had a chance to playtest any of the PrCs from Nyambe? There are some very interesting concepts there, but I'm worried about balance. I'm thinking in particular of the Inyanga Yensimbi, who gets fighter BAB, two good saves, d8, 4 skill points, a number of nice abilities including...

    Publisher Opinions of FFE Events?

First post for me after a year of lurking... Anyway, the irony is that FFE was forced to take this action in part because they used the name Drawmij in Rings of Power. Drawmij is Jim Ward's own character, but I guess he does not have the rights to it.
