Martial Practices, Rituals, and Player Creativity

First, a preface: My campaign suffers from two systemic issues that really irk me. 1) My players tend to get locked into what they can or can't do based on their trained skills and powers, and fail to think outside of the box. 2) Rituals get very little love, and so situations tend to devolve...

Inquisitors should have been the name for Avengers

To be honest, I think a ranger MC Avenger is exactly the description of a Witchhunter. Grab a radiant weapon and you can be shooting bolts of light into your witchy foes. Still, a lot of the Avenger's design goes into making a good cloth-wearing, big-weapon user. If you were to give them a...

Inquisitors should have been the name for Avengers

I would guess because Warlords, fighters, and bards are not strikers. Avengers are strikers, so are rangers. Its easy enough to mix the two and get a decent character. I guess I'm not sure why you need a ranged version of an Avenger, when the whole shtick of the Avenger is to pursue their oath...

Inquisitors should have been the name for Avengers

I believe the class you're looking for is... The Ranger. Yes, its not a divine class, but you said divine magic was secondary anyway, so can't you get away with this idea by being a Ranger multiclassed into Avenger?

    Pandemonium!

An exploded cube might be the way to go with this map; much cleaner than my original idea which was "use your imagination". Also, I love the idea for influencing gravity shifts. Did your players like dealing with the extra dimensions of this kind of fight? I usually put altitude in their...

    Pandemonium!

They're level 21, fresh into epic tier. This will be the first big battle they've had thus far, and its all the culmination of letting a person get kidnapped and then failing to rescue them for 3 encounters. The gravity change will be every other round. Odd numbered rounds will have a warning...

    Pandemonium!

So my players just got to Pandemonium for the first time, hoping to trail some bad guys back to their hideout. Having never used this plane before, I had fun with some altered gravity antics, and decided to do a thoroughly complex encounter based on altering gravity. The idea is that the...

    Hybrid Warlock/Swordmage

Pretty there's an epic feat called Rapid Aegis Reaction that lets you not count your Aegis as your Immediate Interrupt the first time you use it each round. So he gets 2 Aegis' or 1 Aegis and some other interrupt. He has a feat that bumps the damage blocked by 5, which leaves you with a base...

    Hybrid Warlock/Swordmage

You're correct. I was looking at it from purely stats. I have a Shielding Swordmage in my group, and he regularly prevents 27-28 damage twice per round at level 21, and combining that mark with Hellish Rebuke and White Lotus Riposte is pretty nasty. The choice becomes "deal 1/3 your normal...

    Hybrid Warlock/Swordmage

Some thoughts, in no particular order: Assault Swordmage doesn't really have any synergies with a Con Lock. They use Strength for all their riders. Shielding Swordmage, however, uses Int/Con, which is perfect for an Infernal or Vestige Warlock. You only have to worry about 2 stats, and put your...

D&D 5E What needs to be fixed in 5E?

Most of the "customization" in 4e characters is done with feats, rather than skills. Skills are general, wide-sweeping things, while feats are specific and do a better job adding that solid character depth. Take the feat "Linguist", as well as the History and Thievery skill (perhaps grab...

D&D 5E What needs to be fixed in 5E?

I think the idea of a character sheet is to give mechanics to what a character can do. You don't need mechanics to say you've got a green thumb. Who a character is hardly is represented by what's on the character sheet; its represented by how they interact with the world, i.e. Non-mechanical...

    Challenging an Epic Party

Great note. Prone is almost as bad as stun. The way I've gotten around this: Give the big bad guys some kind of flight and make him immune to prone while flying. Two birds with one stone!

Looking to make a high Bluff skill-monkey... Help!

I'll second the use of copious skill powers to get more from your Bluff ability than just the ability to lie. Also, consider getting a level 10 head item called the Hat of Disguise. It's got an at-will power that lets you make yourself look like anyone else, even specific people if you've seen...

How long, in real time, would you expect a campaign from 1-30 to take?

I've been running an accelerated game for 3 years now, and my players just hit level 21. We play 1/week for 3 hours a session. I expect we'll get to level 30 in another two years, putting us at 5 years total.

    Wiz15 Ball Lightning

He's saying that you cannot do the repeat the attack as a minor action on the round you first cast it, and only use that minor action to repeat the attack on subsequent rounds.

    Wiz15 Ball Lightning

It looks like the player is mostly right. You can get 2 attacks on the first round. The attack is written as part of casting the spell, and the minor action isn't limited to only subsequent rounds. However, there is no "sustain" or "standard action" way to use the power on subsequent rounds, so...

    Neverwinter Campaign Setting Resources

Maybe you could take maps from the original, non-ruined Neverwinter and turn it into ruins. That'd also give you hooks for places not covered in the Campaign Guide. I'm not sure if such a supplement exists, but it could work. Also, and this is something I've noticed as a DM who also runs over...

    Optimizing a Con-based Warlock

I'd suggest starting with 12 Dex, that way by level 11 you qualify for DIS, and if you really want to, the assassin MC. You don't really need DIS until level 11 anyway, because before that its a good chance you don't have a secondary implement that's higher than a +1.

    Optimizing a Con-based Warlock

I don't know the math particularly well, but I'm tempted to think on a per combat basis, a +1 to attack (or +2 for Hidden Sniper) gives you more of a DPR increase than 6. Not only that, but Warlocks are pretty strapped for actions. They'll often have to move to get Shadow Walk, minor action to...
