    Fortune cards.

A lot of people seem really hung up on the word "collectible." Instead of looking at the booster pack as a collectibility mechanism, look at it as a randomization mechanism. Someone said there was no reason for these to be sold in random booster packs (other than crass commercialism). They're...

    Really cool stuff. Thanks!

    How do you describe D&D?

That's a pretty good description (the A-Team analogy). If you have to get detailed, that's not a bad way to go. Personally, I avoid any description of game play when faced with this question. Instead, I compare it to a poker night or similar activity. A bunch of us get together on a regular...

    D&D Movie/TV New D&D Movie

Hey, George, thanks for dropping by and sharing a few tidbits! I'm not expecting great things out of the third movie, but I'm glad to hear that the franchise is at least continuing the upward trajectory! And I'm glad Silver brought you onboard for this one.

[WotC's recent insanity] I think I've Figured It Out

Matt, I agree that 4E has narrowed D&D's focus too tightly on the encounter. And I agree that building beyond that serves D&D both by highlighting its unique strengths compared to similar forms of entertainment, and by inspiring play and players. But I totally don't get this Temporal World kick...

[WotC's recent insanity] I think I've Figured It Out

I want to go back and make a quick point about Matt's first post. Matt, as always, your thoughts are insightful and well stated. But in this case, you've missed one important factor which is relevant to the OP's position. D&D is a lifestyle brand. Most people connect to it by joining the...

[WotC's recent insanity] I think I've Figured It Out

Inspiration. Seriously, that's what we buy when we buy the next game book, whether it's crunch or fluff or whatever. As gamers, we have a hunger for new ideas, a new spark to set off new ideas and experiences--interesting character concepts and twists for our adventures and compelling aspects...

30 Second Bunnies Versus Tome of Horrors

Thumbs up! And let me give a quick shout-out to Mat Smith, who apparently was the one who made this happen. Mat doesn't get the recognition he deserves--among other things, he was the first person to call WotC's attention to PAX, which at the time was just a little show local to Seattle drawing...

    Solar-powered wasps

I've run into those here in the US. The ones I've encountered lived in holes in the ground and were either solitary or the nests were small (or perhaps just not busy). The sting does suck, but not that much more than a normal wasp. They are big--bigger than the video makes them seem. About the...

    D&D voted no.3 favourite toy/game!

I'm not really surprised that D&D did so well. When you run a poll like the one they based this show on, you're really asking adults about the toy experiences from their childhood that are most memorable to them. D&D is an exceptionally memorable experience. It's not like anything you played...

Fantasy Flight Games statement on Star Wars License

Thanks for digging, Mr. DM! Can't wait to finally hear who does have it, and more importantly, what they plan to do with it . . . .

Getting those campaign details out of your head and into your players'

Yeah, I'm all about the phasing of information, both in terms of creation and dissemination. Paint the big picture in broad strokes, then layer on the detail as needed. Keeps me sane as a GM, and keeps it digestible for the players.

Getting those campaign details out of your head and into your players'

Your campaign world is filled with exotic lands, well-developed societies, massive cities, factions and nations and allies and foes, and a veritable army of NPCs. All living happily in your imagination or a notebook full of notes. Problem is, how do you transfer all that detail and life and...

GM's anyone ever have a Female?

Great question. In 30+ years of gaming, I've had women in just about every gaming group I've been part of. In my current group, the women outnumber the men. But now that I think about it, over all that time I've only played in a single, one-shot adventure that was run by a woman. I know my wife...

The Office's Rainn Wilson talks D&D on last night's Conan O'Brien

A fun interview and great D&D mention, but I have one criticism--especially in light of the fact that he was basically name-dropping D&D for the purpose of establishing geek cred. The correct way to establish real geek cred is not to say "I'm so geeky I played D&D when I was 14." It's to say...

    The Power to Do Anything!

(And by the way, art can be done on a schedule, and inspiration can be summoned on demand. It just takes a bit of training and discipline. Just ask any professional in a creative field; if they couldn't work on schedule and on demand, they'd be out of a job!)

    The Power to Do Anything!

Yeah, I agree that the name is pretty pedestrian. Suggestions? ("Do Something Cool" is already taken.) The point here, though, isn't to force creativity. It's simply to remind people, as they look at their list of options, that the list is open-ended. It's just a nudge to say "You can do one of...

    The Power to Do Anything!

Your back's against the wall. The dragon's pushing the party toward a TPK. You're up next in initiative: What are you going to do to save your bacon? You start shuffling through those power cards, looking for just the right option--but your at-wills aren't going to cut it and you've already...
