For Those Who Love, Hate, or Love & Hate 4E: What Did 4E Do Right?

Like: Encounter Design. Dislike: Disparity of support for combat and non-combat portions of the game.

I'm DM'ing a Player Who Just Announced his Bard is a Kleptomaniac Pickpocket. Crap.

Hi Joe! First of all, the best way to rid a player of an unwanted shtick is to beat him to the punch. Have some NPCs going kleptomaniac on his PC day in day out, and he'll loose interest pretty quickly. Note that such DM-player antagonism is a last resort when ordinary channels of communciation...

WotC just mailed out VILLAGE OF HOMMLET 4E..got mine

Look, saying it twice doesn't it lend your suggestion more credibility. There was no complaint of Castle Greyhawk 3.5 being plagiaristic in nature, which makes your claim for 4E Hommlet quite far fetched. How far would you go? That there should have been an uproar because 4E core books, using...

WotC just mailed out VILLAGE OF HOMMLET 4E..got mine

If even half of the Paizo post's content is true, then "deferential" strikes me as an odd choice of adjective in this context. Oh, they could have - and in fact, did so, on a previous occasion. Not only is the following side-bar a superb way to handle (as opposed to: dodge) the issue. Also, the...

WotC just mailed out VILLAGE OF HOMMLET 4E..got mine

Not really, though a poster at Paizo raised a couple of interesting observations. While I think that final line has some bite - especially since WotC put Gygax' name on the cover, implying a sort of cooperative authorship - I've also heard of other people's experience who ran the thing on its...

Reavers of Harkenwold -- new campaign setting?

I'd also assume that the "H" in "HS" means "heroic". So this doesn't preclude the possibility of them doing 3 instalments of "HS" (as the "1" in "HS1" seems to indicate), followed by 3 instalments of "PS" and "ES" respectively for the upper two tiers. What's the "S"? Here's my shot at it. It's...

My Response to the Grognardia Essay "More Than a Feeling"

@Ariosto I'm grateful for your presence on this thread - indeed on EnWorld as such, which apart from a ridiculously small number of lucid posters has become a complete waste of time. It's worth pointing out that entering a thread just to insult people is a pretty good way to get booted from...

The 3 Core Books plus THIS ONE BOOK are all you can use to game--What's the one book?

This. For 4E, I would toss out the DMG -regardless of whether that would give me a spare slot in the this thread's (quasi)poll.

WotC just mailed out VILLAGE OF HOMMLET 4E..got mine

I've had to login in about ten times (no exaggeration) to avoid being auto-directed to Magic:the Gathering when clicking "Rewards" on my DCI account. And even then the "Dm Rewards" doesn't show up as an option for me (only "player awards" does), never mind that I DM'ed some LFR last year. At...

How many DM's have actually run a published Adventure Path?

As someone who's put his own "Second Darkness revamped for Greyhawk" campaign on hold, I'd really appreciate it if you and your friends found the time to occasionally post a story hour (either on these boards or at paizo.com). :)

MtG, D&D and Me TITLE NAME EDIT-The thread where Joe apparently offends everyone

The topic of her work doesn't really merit a thread of its own, even though you seem to think so. Mentioning her work in this thread, on the other hand, seems warranted since WotC apparently thinks that fiction of that genre , of which Joe's is an instance, has a place in DDI. May I suggest...

MtG, D&D and Me TITLE NAME EDIT-The thread where Joe apparently offends everyone

Thanks, Joe. Like I said last time, it's really enjoyable to read about you. Not least because, over and above the connect, when you develop these narratives you'rs are extremely well written. I mean - damn, WotC actually pays Shelly Mazzanoble to create such fictions for part of their customer...

Lifting players's selection constraints on powers - has anyone tried this?

Certainly. It also undercuts the niceties of building a really nice...well... character build. Which is all about choosing your powers (and then factoring in feats and equipment). But on the other hand, I'm thinking of pulling my players (who've pulled into 3.5 after our first 4E campaign)...

Lifting players's selection constraints on powers - has anyone tried this?

Yes. I'd also limit any and all mechanisms in 4E which allow a player to tap into powers that don't belong to his main class (as in, multiclassing feats and the Bard's class ability at level 1) from getting synergistic on my "open up all options every day" proposal.

Lifting players's selection constraints on powers - has anyone tried this?

If you look at the table on page 29 of Player's Handbook 1, you'll see a codification of "Total Powers Known" per level. For instance, a level 1 PC gets 2 at-wills, and one encounter and daily power each. At level 30, he still only gets 2 at-wills, but 4 encounter and daily powers each. Here's...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder RPG Core Book - Cover Posted

For what it's worth, I own the real thing on the left hand side. The illustration on the 4E char sheet folder itself - and not the illu you get on the "wrapping" - is actually left-right reversed (this somewhat undercutting an interesting follow-up post here on the difference in dynamics between...

On Change, Old School, New School, Same School, and High School.

Joe, thanks for that OP. To be honest, I wasn't interested in the topic, but your name recently started to rear my head when you wrote that satirical imitation of the Greg Leeds interview. You're most certainly not without creative talent (to respond to st. you said above). It was nice to read...

    Seen the Dreamblade minis? Like/don't?

I love Dreamblade minis and have used them for D&D. I gave up cutting off the figs from their base pretty soon and resorted to painting the base black (and yes, this certainly narrows the range of minis to choose from, since only "large" (D&D talk) minis can be used that way). As for using the...

    GTS 2009 D&D Seminar - the Rouse discusses D&D

4E and the DIY mentality Ariosto hit the nail above. 4E isn't marketing one of its most considerable strengths: ease of customizability. Like the "design your own trap" article that came out in Dragon magazine after the core books were released - that's the sort of stuff you want to be in the...

Arcane Power Art Gallery: Welcome back, old friends

I certainly don't mind re-cycled art - if it is done well. If you look at 3.5 Rules Compendium, which ONLY contained re-cycled art, I never felt ripped off, because the art was re-used in a such a clever way (see the Enworld review for specifics). What irks me about Arcane Power is that some of...
