This is my new all-time favorite monster book (13th Age Bestiary)

On the Pelgrane Press shop page scroll down to 'Other Publications' and expand that. You'll see the Bestiary. It's still listed as pre-order for some reason, even though it is absolutely out.

How I adapted the icons to work in my Neverwinter campaign

I hear ya. I too have struggled to come to turns with using the icons in non-Dragon Empire settings. Bravo for making the effort, though! In theory it seems like it should work pretty well, as the Neverwinter setting as presented has lots of intrigue and different factions and powers vying for...

How Gary Gygax lost control of D&D

I've read that before. Unfortunately, Intellectual Ventures has basically turned into one of the world's biggest patent trolls. I'm not a Myhrvold fan.

How Gary Gygax lost control of D&D

Arguments about what MIGHT have been are pretty pointless. Maybe it would have taken ten years for someone to make a true RPG without Gygax. Maybe it would have taken ten months. The point is, there were several people and groups of people working in that direction, and the elements needed to...

How Gary Gygax lost control of D&D

There were numerous groups doing some form of 'role playing' before Arneson. The trick was thinking to combine that activity with a war game with its free-wheeling, referee-based rules. ETA: Oh, and making it a fantasy game was an important innovation. Many of the earlier 'role playing' games...

How Gary Gygax lost control of D&D

I agree with all of this. I actually think Gygax did incredibly well. Remember, this guy was an out-of-work shoe salesman who suddenly found himself at (or near) the helm of a multi-million-dollar company that employed hundreds of people. It's incredible that he was able to do this at all. But...

Harlot Table - Was it REALLY in D&D??

This puts me in mind of the excellent Clickhole article, It's Time To Stop Saying 'Buxom Wench'. Note for the humor impaired - this article is a parody.

D&D 5E A viable game and the vicious edition cycle

Just to put this argument to bed, the rules of Monopoly DO change, and have been doing so every decade or so since it's release in 1936*. Hasbro recently accepted submissions for popular house rules which it will add to the official rules of the 2015 version of the 'classic' game. * you don't...

D&D 5E A viable game and the vicious edition cycle

THIS. TSR didn't go under because it produced too many settings. TSR went under because it was badly mismanaged.

    Buying odd size dice

I'm actually thinking of picking up a d3 of some sort. d3s are referenced quite frequently by the 13th Age books. Yes, you can use a d6 and divide by 2, but it's kind of annoying. :hmm:

How Gary Gygax lost control of D&D

Was it? "1st edition" encompassed 0D&D, 'Basic', AD&D and BECMI, four versions of the game with very different rules. It's a little disingenuous to argue that they weren't releasing new 'editions' of the game constantly during that period. They just weren't named as such.

Shadows of Eldolan and The Book of LOOT!

Thanks Steve. I would definitely like to see a full review of both, esp. BoL!

Pathfinder 1E Sacred Geometry - Ladies and gentlemen, Pathfinder has jumped the shark

Spell-ing Bee: Open a dictionary and have the DM pick five words. Spell them all correctly. If you do this you are now the DM's favorite player for the rest of the session, but the other players will beat you up and take your lunch money when the DM isn't looking.

    D&D 5E Speculating about the future of the D&D industry/community in a post-5E world

    That's right! Won't somebody think of the owlbears?!? * sorry, off-topic I know, but I couldn't resist thread-crashing. I love this image!

How Gary Gygax lost control of D&D

No problem. I think the story is interesting for a couple reasons. #1 is Gary Gygax's desire to make sure that D&D/TSR was owned by gamers, which was admirable. But #2 it was clear that they needed some people with business experience too, to keep them from running their company into the...

13th Age: what would you like to see next?

That would be interesting, although I suspect Tweet + Heinsoo would leave that up to a third party. The Dragon Empire setting seems to be very much a part of the story they want to tell with 13th Age. The Bestiary and especially 13 True Ways only reinforce that. To be honest, the setting is the...
