    I'm a bad DM part 2

Having not read most of the thread before replying... The problem that I have with this GMing style is that, but fudging and nerfing your players through the underlings, you are training them to act in a certain way and building certain expectations; along with building false confidence in...

    I'm a bad DM

No matter what you do, someone will always dislike you, or disagree with you. No matter how extreme the position, you can always find some nutcase to agree with it. No matter how good the proposition, there will be people who oppose it. Since you can never make 100% of the people in your life...

ways to propel yourself while levitating

Sure they are. It's called "run away and wait for the spell to end". Even Wolves are smart enough not to hang around getting blasted when they can't reach you.

    Am I an atypical DM?

Combat gets real slow when someone (often the GM) needs to look up a new spell that hasn't been around for years, or handle unique monster abilities or things we don't see a lot, like sundering (for example). Other than that, I have no complaints about bonus stacking and the like slowing things...

    Non-combat rewards

Like KM said, those kind of rewards have been around a long time. The problem is generally that they always end up going to the same people. I used to try it a lot, in order to attempt to "draw out" certain people and get them to RP more, but it failed miserably. People who don't RP aren't...

How far should Players develop NPCS (part vent/part ?)

Bingo! My world, my NPCs. You want to create one, fine. But the moment it leaves your hand, I'm free to change it as I desire. Especially when I don't think it fits my game world. Arguing with me about it is not going to produce positive results, and I'd make that abundantly clear. My...

Gnolls, lycanthropes and BBEGs - ideas please

Numbers, numbers, numbers. Throw the Horde at them. All the 'lesser' packs get sent in first to soften up the party. That gives everyone a chance to shine. Lots of AoO opportunities for the Combat Reflexes guy, lots of targets for everyone. Consider making the Seer a Doppleganger with...

ways to propel yourself while levitating

Levitation in combat is folly. Unless your GM is extremely forgiving. You're largely immobile (as you found out). You're highly visible. You're out of reach of the Cleric and any healing. Sounds like a great target. Especially an immobile, unhealable WIZARD. No way I'm letting that guy...

    Stupidest things PCs/DMs have done

Last night we came awful close to what would have been a remorseless TPK on my (GM) part. Not so much a 'stupidest thing' story, but a near miss. Party is thrashing around too interested in being heroes to actually stop and think about the PLOT that is going on. Scads of opportunities to talk...

How many people do you have on ignore? (No names!)

So far, with less than 20 responses, there is one person with '10 or more'. Wow. What would be really fun would be the kind of poll that lets you see who voted what. But I supposed then people wouldn't want to be honest about it.

What form of magic is most usefull in day to day life.

I think that too many people are looking at it with the idea that you're higher than first or second level. For the basic low level person, it's Wizard all the way. If only for the variety of zero level spells. Prestidigitation can do a lot of very nice things. Detect Poison. Light! Ray of...

Do your PCs' actions carry over into your next campaign?

I'm on Campaign 7 in my Homebrew. Sometimes it affects the next, sometimes not. It depends on when and where I set the next campaign. I've jumped continents, I've jumped time periods. My last campaign definitely set up the current one, but the last campaign had no connection to any previous...

Can a Wizard learn a spell for a level they can't cast yet?

Pretty much cleared up above, though I've never actually seen a GM allow someone to scribe a higher level spell into their spell book. As a House Rule, since I do not use Spell Books, I allow people to "know" spells one level above what they can currently cast.

    What's your screen name from?

Something like 20+ years ago, I joined a PBM game where I played a member of a Lizard race. Needed something vaguely dragon-ish and really liked 'Chimera'. Hence, it became my ship name, then my standard BBS handle, and ultimately an identifier that I use in quite a few places.

    What's your screen name from?

Yeah well, your character in my campaign is named "Lawrence". So there may be some truth there. :D Just stick to playwriting, No Creativity Boy.

    Today's pop culture...

I still have to laugh at what I call "The Chicken Boys", though. That's like a mohawk, but the sides aren't necessarily shaved and the center ridge looks a lot more like a rooster's comb. See them all the time. Looks silly. OTOH, I recall walking into a Target about four years ago and the...

How much bonus XP for player logs?

I've made it abundantly clear that I don't run that sort of game. I got some of the 'not paying attention during the game' too. But that's usually just one problem player, and he's got the same issues IRL. As I said, they were told twice that the story hour contained information that we...

    Chimera's Story Hour

Start Session 7] Leaving the family behind, the party moves north with the Burberry tribe until they reach Trade Meet, approximately 8 miles to the north. There they find a small wooden building, garden and pasture at the intersection of two trails. In the pasture is a mangy old draft horse...

How much bonus XP for player logs?

Me too. A lot of the time I'd just be happy if they'd bother to read the bloody thing before the session, especially when I'm using the Story Hour as an important tool. Heck, at the end of the session before last, I told them flat out that I would post some additional information in the story...

    Greenwood on FR npcs

But that's pretty much Human Nature. Real Life Occult Orders (Wiccans, Golden Dawn, etc) usually make up some "Lineage" to some important person or some such nonsense. Because people feel better if they can feel like their new faith/belief/practice has been around for thousands of years rather...
