    Level Progression

Of course this varies greatly by campaign, but in my game I aim for once every 5 to 8 sessions. In the current campaign this puts us leveling every other adventure or so.

What is "grim and gritty" and "low magic" anyway?

I haven't seen the sales numbers for the products you mentioned above, so I wouldn't agree that they are popular settings. In fact, even though I go to a pretty good game store two or three times a month, I had only seen a couple of those supliments. So, I guess I wouldn't conceed that they...

DM gives you your PC; annoyance or opportunity?

I wouldn't do this in my campaign, but then I've always had good luck finding players that create characters within the scope of what I'm looking for in the world. If you do decide to create characters, I would create twice as many as you need for the game. Then let the players draw two each...

What is "grim and gritty" and "low magic" anyway?

I would agree with this, and think that this is exactly what I have been saying. GM's don't want to admit they are playing low level D&D, so they rip out all the stuff that makes a game high level and then say they are playing high level. When characters advance they get feats, spells...

    What would it look like?

I think sometimes we over estimate the power that magic would have on the average person in a world of D&D level magic. Look around you. While there are tons of fantastic inventions and powers in our world, we as the peasants of our time are largely unaffected by them. Some things filter...

What is "grim and gritty" and "low magic" anyway?

I would say that most fantasy is low level D&D. I know it would pain most people to admit this, but LOTR is a low level D&D game. Gandolf was not much more then a 5th level wizard based on the D&D game. Aragorn was not much more then a 4th to 6th level fighter. The hobits started out as at...

What is "grim and gritty" and "low magic" anyway?

If you can find it, read some Jack Vance. That is the world the D&D magic system is based on. It might not be your flavor, but it is a fun read, world and some pretty good rogue like main characters.

What is "grim and gritty" and "low magic" anyway?

I throw you much respect for taking on the fighter feats while you knock down mage power. Without judging the fun you or the players are having, it seems odd that in three games you have only one spell caster and a bunch of rogue-fighters(I don't know exactly, just guessing from the skills...

    Limiting Player choice useless?

Ouch, that's hard core DMing! In Darksun channeller(mages) were to be killed on sight and they left visible destruction in the surrounding area when they cast. I still never saw a party with out a channeller. A better question is why is it important to you that the party conform to the...

What is "grim and gritty" and "low magic" anyway?

So why not just play at low levels? It is perfectly acceptable to not give out as much experience and keep the game at the low levels that you seem to prefer. When players advance to higher levels they gain more powers. If they can't use those powers, what did they really gain? If you...

What is "grim and gritty" and "low magic" anyway?

I would agree that high magic can fall flat, and can go over the top. The reason I come out so strong on this is that unlike high fantasy, no one ever seems to say that low magic can be bad. While I would agree that the problems are tied to certain GM's. I'd also say the the style is also...

What is "grim and gritty" and "low magic" anyway?

I only see GM's espousing that they love "grim and gritty" I don't see any players jumping up and down for the restrictions. Pound the table that I am wrong if you must, but it doesn't change my experiences. Actually I have found White Wolf that way, but the others are fine. I'm not ignoring...

What is "grim and gritty" and "low magic" anyway?

I would draw a distinction between a tough game and a "grim and gritty" game. Tough games are where the players know they can't win every fight and that they won't face challenges that only try to drain their resources. They know that kicking down the door might be a death sentence, so they...

    You Gaming this weekend?

Every Friday night we game from when the pizza gets finished (usually around 7:30) until midnight. Right now I have just two players, but I just moved here, so I don't really know anyone yet. Setting: Generic world, with flavor of FR. Characters are just passing 6th level, though several...

    XML list of monsters

Hello. I'm looking to build a DB tool to help create encounters for my home game. Since I don't want to type it all in, I was hoping someone had already converted the monster manual to and XML file. Does anyone out there in Enworld land have such a file, or perhaps a csv file. Heck I't even...

What is "grim and gritty" and "low magic" anyway?

In my experience "grim and gritty" and "low magic" has equaled poor DM. It means DM's that feel magic missle is over powering, but a fighter with a sword that critical threats on 16 or greater and does 4D6 plus strength, 3 times per round is perfectly balanced. It means the DM is getting ready...

*Grumble* I'm supposed to be good at DMing!

Sounds like you just had an off night. It does happen. Things I've tried to salvage the situation. a) Take a short break in the middle of the fight. When the players get back together tell them you realize that the fight is taking a long time, and ask them to try to rally to get through it...

Bards and their wacky arcane cure spells.

I think you've hit on the exact reason I wouldn't allow healing to spread in the party. As it is now, the fighter is addicted to curing. Giving it to more classes just means more classes spending their spells to "bump up" the fighters rather then being their own character. Curing is a...

[DM Issue] - How would you have handled this?

I think if your going to parse the ready action statements so literally, you probably need to clarify what they want when they state their initial actions. A quick "Do you mean get hit or take a swing at you?" would have prevented all the acromony at the table.
