2nd vs 3E rules. Most difficult transition?

Hey WillieW I just got done springing "nine tenths" on my party last week. What do we need to do to get you to write more modules???? To your question. I found as a GM the attacks of opportunity and the segmented combat round to be somewhat tricky. I also found creating monsters to be...

    Munchkin bashing [rant]

Let me throw out some words and see if it sheds any light on the topic. First off I think "realistic" is an ambigous choice to describe what Zappo is objecting too. After all casting a fireball isn't very "realistic" and quite frankly none of us are looking for too much reality in our...

What flavor does your campaign have?

My campaign is a cyberpunk campaign set during a magical industrial revolution in a traditional high fantasy milue. I run adventures of powerful trade houses clashing, using magic not technology to get the edge on eachother. These house are mostly human, orc, dwarven, and gnome, with ogre...

    Munchkin bashing [rant]

As one of my old players/DM used to say, "You can always role play a min/maxed character." My problem with strict "roleplaying" players is that they are often are more into their own characters then into solving the adventure at hand. I don't understand why it is "better" to roleplay a...

    Dying Earth RPG

I've read the books. Cugel's Saga is one of my all time favorite fantasy novels. The Eyes of the Overworld is also a good read, if a bit dated.

    Photoshop mapping...

KC Try this to make a quick grid pattern. Go to Filters -> Texture -> Patchwork Turn relief down to zero. Just a matter of resizing the square size from there. Side Note: I'm totally up for this idea of exchanging ideas and files to help with photoshop mapping. Blake

My new LOW MAGIC game idea!!!

Gee I wonder why. Here is a hint. If no one wants to do this, its because it doesn't sound fun to them. Players don't like it when you take away all the cool powers and make them lame. They find that lame. They want you to run cool stories and let them keep their powers. You can tell...

    Tumble - Isn't it broken?

I don't think tumble was designed to allow tumble past someone that takes up the whole door way. I didn't read any place in the rules that said tumbling made you insubstantial and able to pass barriers without consequence. I think as a GM you could easily make the case that if the body...

    Skills over the top

Is this the point where I jump up and shout "Ahmen brother"? :) My thinking is that before we need another monster manual, we need a skills challenge manual and a spells challenge manual. We need a book that goes through each of them and gives GM's ideas for how to broaden their game. To...

    Skills over the top

I think the problem arises from the fact that most encounters are set up for the fighter to solve them with a strong swing of the sword. Most of the GM whining I hear on these boards arises from situations where characters try something other the swordplay to solve a situation. Many don't...

Which "must buy" gaming item did you buy, but never use?

Alternity: Own pretty much all of it, never got the game off the ground. I'm hoping to get one together once D20 Modern comes out, but I'm having way to much fun playing D&D right now. Psionics Handbook: Cool ideas, poor implementation and I don't have the time to make it work. Lots of...

Of course you could always apply one of 'dem 'dare situational modifiers to the tumble roll. I would say tumbling by yawn dragon might be a +5 or so to the roll. Don't forget they be big as well so you might have to make the roll for each five foot square. Just a thought.

Help Me, Teach Newly Recruited Girl Gamer Learn DnD

Do you have a player in the group that you can trust to help her through the first game? After talking them through character creation, I often turn over new players to one of my strong players to help them through the session. This does two things, first it allows you to do more running of...

The tale of a Rat Bastard DM

Ok, I don't know the player and I don't know you, but some of the things you've said lead me to believe that the player might have been having a problem before this game. It could be that he knew that he was walking into a bad situation and did so to force a social confrontation. He might have...

Can't touch the PCs! What's a DM to Do?

Hey Chris Sounds like you've gotten lots of advice, so I'll try to keep mine brief. If they are killing your monsters too quickly, add hitpoints. There is a really easy system for adding levels onto monsters. This has the added bonus that the monsters will hit more often as well. Don't be...

    Giant Kingdoms!

I've often used stone giants as fine craftsmen and builders of grand structures. Need a pyramid or grand cathedral, call the stone giants. I give them a belief system that incorporates building these structures into their understanding of glory and honor. They believe that they gain...
