What level do you start your campaign at?

I've started having people role up characters at 3rd level so they have some options on ECL and they can bring in some of the non-standard PC races.

Low magic vs. magic as a plot device

And as such I have no problem with it. Sounds like a cool idea. Where I start to get my feathers ruffled is when the new system start from the premise that casting magic is a bad thing and if you do it you must immediatly pay a character penalty (HP, XP, or Abilities). That way of making...

Low magic vs. magic as a plot device

Yes, we have looked into it. In fact we spend quite a bit of between game time kicking around different methods of doing spells. Personally I like the Soviern Stone casting system and spells. I also liked the old limited point but semi quick recovery system that 2e had for Psionics. That...

Low magic vs. magic as a plot device

I think this strikes at the heart of the issue. Some think mages should be an active part of the game that takes action as often as the fighters and with similar effectiveness in taking down monsters, solving puzzles and in general completing the adventure. Some think any solution that...

Low magic vs. magic as a plot device

But that isn't the style of unsafe that is being bantered about here. And you could have epic level casters do the same thing in D&D with the current spell system.

Low magic vs. magic as a plot device

Look all I'm saying is that limiting the reliability of magic and making it not free maps less to fiction than the current D&D system. Building an arguement for destroying the spell casting system based on how it maps to fiction silly. Admit you don't like D&D magic and you want to change...

Low magic vs. magic as a plot device

HMMMM, I remember Gandolf many times not getting off his spell because it wasn't reliable. Your bias is that you either haven't read the fiction that the magic system is based on or you just chose to ignore it. Read Jack Vance's stuff, read Nine Princes of Amber, read some of the Julian...

    How Should the Paladin Suffer?

Like what? If you can't see the cliff, how quickly can you stumble over to it and throw yourself over off so you can roll up a new character? Maybe I'm a weird player, but I don't play D&D so I can suffer through something like being blind or mute. I play it to have a hero that goes on the...

An Open Letter to Dragon and Dungeon Readers

    Thanks for the update Keith. Looks like maybe I'll be picking up my subscription to Dungeon again. Is there away to sign up today and start with just new issues onward? {Dancing on Polyheadran's grave}

    How Should the Paladin Suffer?

This isn't the thread I thought it was going to be based on the title... With a title like "How should the Paladin Suffer", I guess, uhh never mind. Sorry The BBEG :)

What ever happened to "role playing?"

Then what good is the sense motives skill? If the NPC's can't bluff, what mechanic do they use to try to lie to the PC's? I seem to have also been in lots of games where the NPC's are trying to pull something over on the players, and we used Sense Motives to try to figure out what is going on.

    Pet peeves of D&D gaming

Have we gamed together before :) Seriously, I was in a campaign that did all three of these at the same time. After a while when I got sick of seeing a certain tactic I would take the counter with my character and *boom* it was never seen the rest of the campaign. The plots were all...

The rules should serve the game, not vice-versa

I always feel that consistancy is the wrong standard to use as the balancing factor between the NPC's and PC's. Even if the GM is consistant, the NPC's have unlimited resources and don't have to roleplay the crappy levels of wierdly balanced prestige classes etc. Also, they can put together...

Giving yourself treasure... Is there anything wrong with this?

This is a slippery slope, seeding the game with items that only you can really use. When I co-GM'd a game like this before, I never took treasure when I was the GM. It meant that I had less than the other party member, but then I was a monk, so it didn't hurt that much. Once you start...

Low magic vs. magic as a plot device

Funny I don't see Conan as an example of a D&D fighter with Cleave and Power Attack. I can't ever remember Conan reasoning through the AC of the opponent and deciding to take a +4 on his damage so he could kill the low level mooks much quicker. Nor do I ever remember Conan, tactically taking a...

Low magic vs. magic as a plot device

I've always found that to kind of be a straw man arguement. I mean, I don't find fighting, use of skills, or feats to match up very well with fantasy novels either. Yet, I never hear anyone say, "gee, I've never seen someone in a novel with power attack and great cleave." or "I've never read a...

Some questions about social situations in a game.

I guess that is the fundamental dicatomy of why social skills are such a thorn in peoples side. Some people just want a decision made and they will play to that decision, and some people want to have their actions dictate the decision not leave it totally up to chance. For my part I always...

Some questions about social situations in a game.

While I like the social skills as a way to let non-charismatic characters a chance to shine above their natural ability, I dislike the roll based social decisions that come off the current skill system. I find the swings created by the d20 are far too large to effectively manage social...

As a player/DM do you prefer one powerful monster or many weaker ones?

I'll third this. Seems like in 2e we had longer fights and the monsters didn't take down the party quite as fast. In 3E is seems the fight last longer in the realworld, but less time in the game world. Most fights are resolved in less than 5 rounds. Either the monster stomp the party, or the...

The rules should serve the game, not vice-versa

It depends on why you are bending the rules I think it comes down to why the GM is bending/breaking the rules for the NPC's. If they are doing this as a way to beat the players, they are a sad excuse for a GM, and it is totally lame. If they are doing it as a way to make the game more fun...
