Should I let my player off the hook? (long)

I wouldn't let this stand. I would tell the player that his character was executed as a result of being caught in an assination of a noble. Make him role up a new character and start over. I'm not a big fan of DM fiat, but this sounds like just the time to use it.

    I Just Don't Know What to Do. . .

I would try something out of the Expanded Psionics Handbook. Try the new Soul Knife. There are lots of cool things you can do with the Psi focus related feats, and the customizing your weapon stuff looks cool.

    Two players playing one character?

I did this once and it was a lot of fun. I was co-DMing a campaign. We were swapping out every other adventure. Our feeling was that if we each played a character, our characters would fall behind fairly quickly. So, we shared an archer kobold. The character was chaotic, so any changes in...

How do you DM's deal with "Dogpile on the evil wizard" tactics?

It won't cause more damage than having the whole station blown up. :)

Combat balance question (my players stay out!)

Great suggestion Jondor_Battlehammer! A lot of GM's miss this tactic for dealing with spellcasters. Just to build on what you've suggested. It doesn't have to be social situations that suck out the spells from your casters either. If your crawling in a dungeon, throw some manuever...

    What's it like to DM?

I think your right on the money here. Often the GM - Player relationship is the critical part of the game. If they grok eachother then a lot of short comings can be over come. However, as might be the case of the Regal Worm, sometimes the players and the GM are on different pages. Those...

    What's it like to DM?

DMing is like the radio active cross between a orchestra conductor, fantasy author and game show host. At some level you are telling your story. Exploring ideas, plots, moral quandries and interactions thru the eyes of others. At another level, your helping others tell their stories. Helping...

    troubles.....

You might also try to talk with the GM about easing up on you newbies while you are learning the game. I know that the first campaign I played in I was focused on manipulating the system over creating a viable personality. Nothing wrong with enjoying the combat mechanics. Just ask him to be...

    Alignment. Who needs it?

I mostly agree with this but I still feel that alignment has some use. At the very least it forces players to think about their world view before they start playing. The problem I have with alignment is that it doesn't work for lawfull characters. A chaotic or neutral character can flip into...

    troubles.....

Get to know your local NPC In between hacking, take a few minutes out to talk to your barkeep, guard, shopkeeper or dog catcher. Before you know it, you'll be roleplaying up a storm, creating the 18 int rogue with all social skills so you can dominate the role playing action. Seriously...

    First Time Paladin

Don't be lawful annoying. Remember that as much as you have a calling to up hold in the game, it is just a game. Other people have characters concepts they would like to play as well.

Combat balance question (my players stay out!)

Try bumping up the hitpoints of the monsters you throw against the party. If you move their hitpoints just beyond the area of effect damage then when the paladin gets to them they should be with in cleave range. IE if they start out with 35 hitpoints and they get it for 25 -30 points of...

How do you DM's deal with "Dogpile on the evil wizard" tactics?

I think we just disagree on what the definition of players "working for it". I see using disruption as a good player using the powers they bring to the table in a productive way. You see that as cheesy.

How do you DM's deal with "Dogpile on the evil wizard" tactics?

Making up a story for why a power is nerfed doesn't mean you didn't nerf the ability. In game stories are just an excuse by the GM to stop tactics they don't like. I'm not saying mages shouldn't have good tactics or should react poorly. I'm just saying that sometimes we as GM's take...

Is Railroading ever a good tactic?

{sticking tongue firmly in cheek} Oh come on. First the GM, via high level NPC mage, tells Frodo to take the ring to Brie. Then he forces a high level fighter on him that basically dictates how and when he will travel. Then after the council of Elrond the GM forces 5 high level characters on...

Is Railroading ever a good tactic?

I think LOTR has the perfect Diamond shape of adventure. Strong hook pointing to a narrow goal, but no real control over how you get there. Lots of branching and twists in the middle as the players find their way from start to end of the adventure. As a GM and as a player I've always found...

How to Deal with a difficult DM?

I've noticed a lot of bad GM's resort to this blame the players/take cheap shots at them tactic. A good teacher never blames the students when the whole class fails and a good GM never blames all the players when they can't figure out what to do in the game. Then later on they wonder why no...

How do you DM's deal with "Dogpile on the evil wizard" tactics?

But if every NPC knows all the tactics, than you have nerfed the ability. You just don't admit it. What you've told the player is, "You had a good tactic, so good in fact that everyone in the world has now figured out how to counter it. So, it won't work any more" I agree that not everyone...

How do you DM's deal with "Dogpile on the evil wizard" tactics?

I agree to a point. That's why I threw in my two cents on how to combat it. But, I also think there is a large area between cakewalks and crushing a viable tactic and some GM's ignore that ground. Why is disrupting a mage a tactic that needs to be curbed? One player is spending all their...

[Contest, ENPub] Elements of Magic review contest - now over

I guess objectification is in the eye of the beholder. Far be it for me to expect cover art to advance beyond high school male fantasy hormones. With the wealth of ideas, concepts and history of fantasy, why does every novice publisher with an idea have to stick breasts on their front cover...
