    So, about Expertise...

As worded, if you have a two-group weapon (e.g. khopesh, most [all?] polearms), you can take the feat twice--once for each group--and it will stack with itself. This would be remedied immediately by making the bonus a feat bonus, which would also cut down on the power of the feat. I cannot...

Character Sheets: Quick Reference or "Kitchen Sink"?

What I really, really want as a GM is a "contingency sheet", where I can have a list of everything that happens when someone spends an Action Point (including effects like the warlord granting some HP recovery), takes a Second Wind, spends a Healing Surge, etc. There are enough fiddly details...

Warlock pact for NPC with demonic connections?

    Infernal seems an easy one.

Will the WOTC Gametable return or is it dead forever?

If you're feeling very strapped for cash, you could do a one-month subscription every other month. Since they update the compendium toward the end of the month anyway, you'd only be about a week or two behind the rest of the subscribing world in content on your skip months. Total annual cost is...

    Shadow captains Overpowered?

"Each shadow soldier appears in an unoccupied square within range." A single square, so a Medium or smaller creature. Also, it's Sustain Minor, so it's not going to last forever, unless the player allocates some truly disproportionate resources. (Anyway, don't even Sustain powers fall under the...

    PHB2 Excerpts - Backgrounds

You might want to check out the Primal Power preview, with tribal feats. These feats provide a variable amount of bonus depending on how many people in the group have them, so the benefit progression to the group is geometric--i.e., one person gets +1, two people get +2 each, 3 people get +3...

    Swordmage Warding and Versatile weapons

I wanted to enter the grip-change into the action economy, but not unduly penalise my table's swordmage compared to the official ruling, so I instituted the following ruling: Adding hands (picking things up from the ground, switching a single-hand grip to a two-handed grip) is a minor action...

Why doesn't WotC license older editions?

The more accurate video game analogy isn't the software, it's the hardware: "Why doesn't Sony let other companies build PS2s, if they're focusing on the PS3? The other companies could even improve on the PS2!" The answer is that creating your own competition and diluting brand definition is...

    Playtest: Primal Power

My preferred solution is making the initial +1 from the feat untyped, and the rest (the 0-4 from everyone else taking the feat) a feat bonus.

Urbis - Should I follow the GSL, or make the setting system-independent?

It's extraordinarily foolish to sign a contract that you cannot yet read.

digital insider: Monk in PH3, playtest in May

I've become increasingly of the mind that PHB3 and PHB4 will be two-source books, so that each source gets a full four classes necessary for a Power book, allowing WotC to do two Power books a year. I think ki and psionics are a good fit together, but both are so strongly anticipated that it'd...

Avenger Class Details from NY Comic Con '09

Leeeet's see. 18 wis, 18 int deva, take leather proficiency at level one; take hide proficiency at level two; take urgrosh proficiency at level four. That's AC 23 by level four with something like a 75% hit chance on a d12 weapon.

My Brother's Character: Help me help him

Ask him how he expects the goblin to be. If it's going to be sneaky, try a cat or serpent. If it's going to be his best friend, try a wolf. If it's going to be a tough fighter, try a lizard, wolf, bear, or boar. The only animals I'd put off-limits are raptor and spider, in fact. Once you have...

    Playing Dhampyr

Can anyone suggest a reason that Blood Drain shouldn't be Reliable? It seems a bit silly that a two-turn, low-damage attack (even with the fairly useful secondary effect) would be lost on a miss. It's a great way to make someone feel like they've wasted a couple of turns.

    Playing Dhampyr

I'm wondering if (read: hoping that) we're getting a pile of bloodlines in the PHB2. Demon-blooded seems inevitable, as does some sort of Far Realm line. Maybe trolls (base feat granting bloodied regeneration 2)? Fey, with eladrin allowed to take the rest of the chain without taking the first feat?

    Playing Dhampyr

Minor note, but the Heritage feat should probably require "Living non-construct humanoid" instead of "Living humanoid", unless WotC wants warforged vampires ("bloodforged"?) to be LFR-legal.

[High level monsters and powers] What can Graz'zt actually do?

It's important to remember that 4E is a very modern RPG, in that it focuses on one thing (direct conflict, most particularly combat) and does it very well. It is not an attempt at creating a "world simulator" or dice-driven physics engine, like so many RPGs created from the mid-'90s through the...
