Are you happy with your current game/edition?

I'm currently DMing and playing in Labyrinth Lord games and enjoying them both. The possibilities offered by the upcoming new edition of D&D have me excited and intrigued.

    what does Vancian mean?

Lucky for you then that they have already said it won't be the only option. While I have my personal preference, obviously so do you and others. I'm glad they are at least trying to give each of us the tools to make the system work for all of us. A tough task. I wish them luck.

    what does Vancian mean?

We don't really know yet. They want to be able to have both and maybe other options as well. The designers are very early into working on it so even when the open playtest starts I doubt we will have anything solid for how it will finally shake out.

    what does Vancian mean?

I highly recommend getting your hands on a copy of the collected Tales of the Dying Earth and give it a good read. I suspect you will find it entertaining, and it will give you a solid understanding of where many of the D&D tropes are from or at least where the influence that is behind them is...

    The Importance of Randomness

That is nice to hear. Please keep us posted. I ran the original during my Ptolus campaign as a side adventure and the players absolutely loved and feared it. A 10 point horse bite on an 11 point character can be both frightening and fun! /end side-track. I'm really hoping the 5e DMG will be...

    The Importance of Randomness

There have been times in certain campaigns where I have designed special encounters to drop in when the random die indicates. I spent time crafting these things for a purpose. Sometimes they were a triggering event to something in a plot or as a means of giving a clue to the players of upcoming...

    The Importance of Randomness

D&D 5E So why are you buying 5th edition?

That is unfortunate and while I'm not one that would say such things, let me apologize to you on behalf of the open minded OSR folks. 3e and 4e do both have some good things to offer and teach or remind us grognards about. In fact the 4e way of handling monsters really helped remind me how free...

    D&D 5E D&D Next weekly art column!

Here's the link to an artist WotC should look into for some of the 5e art. Site is in Spanish or Portuguese. AJ Manzanedo He is capable of a wide style, but does some really great fantasy D&D type work and has done some for a fantasy rpg already.

D&D 5E So why are you buying 5th edition?

As a member of the OSR community or whatever you want to call it, a big part of it is the experimenting and looking for new ways to do things. Some really nifty approaches to things have come from the OSR folks.

    Identifying Magic Items

While there should be rules for this kind of thing, DMs have always been free to run things their way. The rules are always guidelines and it is the DM that makes the call. That has been a foundational element from the earliest editions onward, but I'm surprised how often I run across people...

    Identifying Magic Items

The house rule I use in my B/X style campaign is as follows: (copied/pasted from my blog) Identifying magic items (not potions). (this rule was created on the go during play and will be discussed in detail in a future blog post). This is done by the use of a lengthy and dangerous ritual that...

    Balancing Save-or-Die

By that same criteria then why can't wizards pick locks or fighters cast cure spells? The OP is just trying to get feedback on setting up mechanics to reflect the core of what a character is, in this case, the assassin. It is a thought excersize. What ideas do have for making it work and what...

D&D 5E Crazy Ideas 5E Should Not Adopt

The box can be used as a littler box. Litter not included. If the cat makes a grunting face while using the box all players save vs spells.

D&D Blog. Should Fighters get multiple attacks?

As recently as this week (or was it last?) word from the design group was that fighters were nowhere near settled as far as mechanics go. I do think that avoiding multiple attacks in most instances would be best, but how to give the fighter some oomph is the question. The example of increasing...

    Ashamed of being a Gamer?

A decade ago I held a job where it was a plus to be involved in hobbies and games. Sadly the pay and benefits were not enough so I had to once again hide my favorite hobby from employers and co-workers. Now I work for a contractor and if the subject were to come up I'd have to deny it to avoid...

Are adventures/modules more important than system?

As a selling point to generate excitement and talk from those who enjoyed playing, to those who haven't, especially potential new gamers, heck yeah. It was what I heard from friends that got me into the game. They weren't talking about system, they were talking about the adventures. Hearing...

    The Importance of Randomness

While I still feel some of it needs to be in the books for the reasons I mentioned before, especially for helping new DMs, I'm absolutely with you on the idea of having digital tools and even phone apps to support the depth of it. Something that would be important to have in the online tool...
