    Page XX?

Unless the 4e Style Guide said "Use XXX for Unknown page references". Then someone makes a typo and types XX, and a search for XXX comes up clean, so... (I've used Framemaker for long documents, and it eliminates the need for Page XX crap...you can just reference the page, and the number...

Question about GSL - Scott please comment

Uhm...advance the SRD all you want. That's what "open" means. :) Unearthed Arcana, Iron Heroes, Grim Tales, all "advance" the SRD. And I dispute the idea that "OGL" is a synonym for "D20".

More to the point, tracking ammo is required by 4e, esp. for rangers. Says so in the rules. :) Tracking ammo is part of Combat, and Combat is Fun. Do you doubt the Computer?

Question about GSL - Scott please comment

Create a game system MORE people want to use and put it under a CC license. The reason the OGL is popular is because of those darn network externalities. More "code" is under the OGL than any other license, and there's a lot to gain by releasing your new game under it -- access to the huge...

Question about GSL - Scott please comment

The problem is, the D20 SRD is released only under the OGL, and only WOTC has the authority to release it under any other license -- and they won't. So, saying "Use another license" is kind of moot when the content people want to use is controlled by the OGL.

    "Fun"

Ah, but the DMG goes with the assumption all groups find the same thing "fun", which is odd, because they discuss different player types and needs earlier. Instead of saying "Talking with guards is No Fun", why not say, "Every group finds different things fun. Focus on the things your group...

So, what do you do when YOU'VE plotted out this cool fight with Winter wolves and goblins and an ice golem, and your players want to play Baba Wawa and interview every single random faceless NPC in the town? I've found that encounters, especially non-combat encounters, write themselves...

GSL & SRD -- Comments, Questions, and Hopes

This might be true, but since the OGL is copyright to Wizards (it basically means the license text itself is not public domain), I am not sure how to interpret that. A much better phrasing would be "does not include any version of the D20 SRD in the S.15 section", or words to that effect, which...

Mongoose 3.0/3.5 Grand Archive - Any Interest?

I'd thought of something like this a long time ago. My thought was, for the 'S15' problem, you could have a script where you could click on content to 'mark' it. (Giving it -2 to attack anyone else) Then you could click a 'download marked content' button, which would: a)Compile all your marked...

    4e D&D GSL Live

Many employment contracts include "non compete" clauses that extend after the employee has left the company. Granted, these tend to be time limited, not infinite -- one year, two years, etc. The GSL has no limit. Thirty years from now, you still can't release an OGL version of a GSL product. :)

Marketing: How would you have done it?

Well, for starters, I wouldn't have focused on the negatives of 3e, but the positives of 4e. Let the players decide for themselves why 4e was "better", instead of beating them over the head with "3e sucks!" I'd have handed out copies of the in-design game to trusted third party developers --...

    "Fun"

If THAT'S the target market, here is how D&D should be played: DM narrates 20 minutes of What The PCs Do. The actual players do nothing. A monster appears! They fight it! If they lose, they fight it again. And again. And again. Until they beat it. Then the DM talks for another 20 minutes...

    4e D&D GSL Live

If anything, I think WOTC missed the boat by NOT using good 3rd party content. IAE, "Oh noes! They be steelin' my ideas!" is pretty much a non-issue, for more reasons than I care to articulate right now. The two real problems I see are: a)New "unredefinable terms" being added to the GSL, with...

You reap what you sow - GSL.

Which brings up an interesting point -- if WOTC *really* hated the pocket PHB, they could -- using the economies of scale and the fact they could print material Mongoose could not -- have blown it out of the water with their own 'streamlined' handbook at a lower price and with higher production...

GSL & SRD -- Comments, Questions, and Hopes

"6.2 No Backward Conversion. Licensee acknowledges and agrees that it will not publish any product pursuant to the OGL that features the same or similar title, product line trademark, or contents of a Licensed Product." They did not say "May not use the D20 SRD". They said "any product pursuant...

GSL & SRD -- Comments, Questions, and Hopes

Well, they CAN stop you from using the OGL. This isn't just D&D, but Runequest, Traveller, FUDGE, ACTION!, Spirit Of The Century, and probably others. You must basically then 'role your own' system (or, I guess, license BRP or Savage Worlds, to name two non-OGL systems with easy license terms)...

    GSL - Devils and Demons?

In the hopes of getting an official reply...does "not redefine" mean "Cannot change the fluff text"? For example, let's say I want to make up Demons and Devils, and use those terms, but in my setting/supplement, "Demons" are humans corrupted by Eldritch Forces and "Devils" are creatures from a...

You reap what you sow - GSL.

OK, let me ask a serious question. What IS the value of ENWorld to WOTC when Gleemax/DDI is intended to be a commercial cash cow? ENWorld is direct competition. Why go to Wizard's buggy, slow, and over-moderated chat boards when there's a thriving community here? ENworld is making money -- not...

    To Scott and Linae

If there had been a "No license" announcement alongside the 4e announcement, there would, now, be a much more robust "post WOTC" 3x environment, instead of one just beginning to coalesce. That's why it would have been better to have none, announced honestly, than one which went through constant...
