That "particular bit of fluff" has been the assumption since at least first edition (it's on page 82 of the DMG, 1979). You can disagree with it until you're blue in the face, but that's what hit points are and have always been for 30+ years.

Then buy it online! It's pretty great - it's what I use in my games. It's durable, and mine gets a lot of use as I'm constantly swapping out stuff in the pockets between games. Plus, it has outward facing pockets, so you can even have pretty art for the players as well.
