D&D 4E Advice: Running an Online 4e Game

I run games online every week, sometimes with a few players in the same room with me and the others remote; sometimes with me alone and everyone else in one other or several other locations. We don't use any map programs whatsoever. We only use iChat (Skype would work just as well as I think...

    Checks: Secret or Not?

I was reading a discussion somewhere online (and now for some reason I can't find it -- if anyone knows, can you please post a link?) about whether the DM or the players should be rolling the PCs' ability and skills checks. I do something between the two extremes (which happens to fit my...

Experience Point Award System for Exploration-Focused Play

Totally in agreement with giving bonus XP for great roleplaying! In the shorter term, I also give bonuses (usually +2) to specific checks or attacks for great roleplaying/great description of a character's actions.

    D&D 4E 4E White Plume Mountain?

Cool. I know it's only preliminary, but I'm glad it's helping you get started. In general, I tried to find either a 4th Edition version of the exact monster (and then adjust the level, if needed) or instead I looked for a 4e monster that was similar in terms of its abilities and which I could...

Experience Point Award System for Exploration-Focused Play

Thanks! Yours is a great alternate system, as well. I would think it would really promote storytelling elements in your games. Sounds fun!

Experience Point Award System for Exploration-Focused Play

For anyone interested, here are my thoughts for encouraging an exploration-based play-style by altering the system for experience point awards. (This, of course, is just one element of an entire system -- or reskinning -- that emphasizes this play-style. Check out the rest of my blog to see more...

    D&D 4E 4E White Plume Mountain?

I converted the module to 4th Edition for AnonyCon this past weekend. You can see the basics of my conversion at the link below. It's not much, but it might save you some time. Also note that I use an exploration-focused style of play, which you can read more about on the blog, so the...

    Rituals Revamped

I really like rituals, but I realize that most groups ignore them (for both cost and casting time reasons). With these house rules I've attempted to create a simple system that encourages their use. If you're interested, you can check out those rules here (along with all my house rules that...

    D&D 4E 4E Hack: "Fiction First" Playtest

If I could give you more xp, I would! I love these write-ups. You're creating a very evocative world here. It's fascinating. If I'm ever up in your neck of the woods I would love to sit in on a game!

    D&D "Flavors..."

Having started playing in 1979 with Holmes Basic and then quickly moving into AD&D, I now use the 4th Edition mechanics to run an exploration-based play-style (which some might call old-school). Here's my latest post on a set of mechanics (based on the Basic D&D and the D&D Rules Cyclopedia)...

    New CB Character Sheet Shots

I like it a lot! Much easier to read/digest. And I agree with the previous thoughts regarding the attack line.

    D&D 4E 4E Hack: "Fiction First" Playtest

Thanks! I think I've got most of it. My only other question is about hit points. I'm not entirely clear on how the chart works (under Step 7: Resolve Actions in the current PDF) in terms of the relation of "hits" to hit points and healing surges. Do PCs and monsters have different hits...

    D&D 4E 4E Hack: "Fiction First" Playtest

This is all really cool. I run my game with a similar mindset, but you definitely go further than I do and I'm interested to try out parts of your system. I was wondering if: 1.) You could post the must current version of the Playtest rules (if you have them written up)? 2.) You could...

    D&D 4E I miss 4E

I have say, I'm glad for the break in non-Essentials 4e products. I can't read the books fast enough! (And I'm happy about the break for financial reasons, as well, because I can't resist new D&D books :D!) I'm looking forward to the new books and boxed sets coming out soon, but I'm glad I'll...

    Play-by-Skype

We use iChat to run our games. We just point the camera at the battlemat. I don't know if Skype allows more than 2 connections (we usually have 3 and iChat can handle up to 4), but if so, that would work the same. The other thing you might look into is Infrno. I've signed up (it's free), but...
