    Foldable Essentials Character Sheet

One of my players made a cool Essentials character sheet you can fold up and stick into your copy of Heroes of the Fallen Lands. I'm posting a link here for anyone interested. New Essentials Sheet! « Legends & Labyrinths

Truename, your treasure cards are great! Would you be willing to share your template? I'd love to use it!

    Essentials characters

The epic destiny feature is different from the paragon path features. You can choose the auto-Essentials epic destiny (like Epic Warpriest) or one for which the PC qualifies from a different 4e source.

    Essentials characters

You are correct. When you take the devout warpriest paragon path, you get all of the devout warpriest paragon path class features (as indicated in the level progression). If you take a different paragon path for which the character qualifies, you do not get the warpriest paragon path features...

With all the ruminations on Essentials, are Power Cards even worth buying any more?

Thanks. I'll check out virtualbox. I looked into Wine, but it won't run the .NET framework. And I thought the same thing about XP, but actually it seems everyone still wants it, so I haven't been able to find it for less than $200. If you have any leads on that front, that would be great!

With all the ruminations on Essentials, are Power Cards even worth buying any more?

I seem to be in a weird niche group. I'm involved in 3 campaigns, 15 people total, and everyone's a Mac person. We're all writers, actors, directors, and editors, so that's not surprising, I guess. But my whole family and my wife's family are all Mac users as well, so no help there. That's...

With all the ruminations on Essentials, are Power Cards even worth buying any more?

It's a fair point. I do have a DDi account, but I'm on a Mac, so it would cost me an extra $250 to print out the cards (I'd need Windows plus Parallels to run the CB), so in the long run, it's actually cheaper for me to get the store-bought Power Cards (not to mention the cost of ink and paper).

With all the ruminations on Essentials, are Power Cards even worth buying any more?

I love Power Cards. I like the fact that they're on heavy cardstock and laminated. I put them in protectors and write my stats on them with wet-erase markers. I still haven't played any of the PHB3 classes because they haven't released cards for them. And I really hope WotC makes more...

D&D Fiction in the New Yorker

At my writing office someone had left this week's New Yorker magazine opened to a short story called "The Dungeon Master." Curious, I started reading and realized, to my surprise, that it was actually about D&D. It's pretty dark overall, but it's not a negative portrayal of the game (at least...

D&D 4E Comparing notes: Differences in play experience in 4e

I agree with all of the above statements. I played 1st Edition all the way through until 4th Edition came out (well, even before that, as a playtester), with some 2nd, 3rd, and 3.5 along the way. I've played on both coasts as well (just moved back to NYC from LA) and I've been to a lot of...

    Putting Rituals in Essentials

I've said before that I'm a huge fan of rituals, so I'm biased on this question. We're streamlining our three campaigns to be Essentials-centric, but still allowing anything from any 4th edition book (or the DDi) to be used. I just changed my wizard over to a mage build and spent a feat on...

Bazaar of the Bizarre- New Format

Overall, I like the direction. The more flavor text, the better in my book. The mechanics work for me -- I'm looking for in-world elements I can use to set the scene, put the players in the context of the milieu. I hope to see more articles like this -- and I really hope they use the new...

Just how popular was DnD? Did kids really play it during lunch? (red box nostalgia)

Oh, yes, we also played STAR FRONTIERS, TRAVELLER, GAMMA WORLD (1st edition), and TOP SECRET (the original edition). I played RUNEQUEST once, and at Scout camp one year I played a session or two of TWILIGHT 2000.

Just how popular was DnD? Did kids really play it during lunch? (red box nostalgia)

Started playing with the Holmes Basic set in 1979, but quickly moved onto AD&D. We played at sleepovers, on Boy Scout camp-outs, and at lunch every day at my Catholic elementary school from 6th through 8th grade (which would've been 1981 to 1984). And everyone played, from the geekiest kid in...

That's awesome! I wish I could've been there. I miss the store! And how cool that Jerry Trainor is playing with them!

Rules Missing from the Rules Compendium

I agree. I just created an Essentials wizard (mage) and used one of my feats (he's human) to take Ritual Caster. I love rituals -- all three of my groups use them every session. Especially Hand of Fate, Arcane Lock, Knock, Silence, Comprehend Language, Wizard's Sight, and a bunch of others...

Is there a link to the official PC sheet in HoTFL?

I wish they'd also post the version from the back of HotFL, which is in landscape orientation. For some reason, I like that layout better (though I definitely prefer the portrait Essentials sheet to the standard PHB sheet).
